Mark Hamilton: Fitness instructor on a cruise ship
I thought about working on a ship after I watched a TV documentary about life on a cruise ship. It seemed really exciting. At the time I was working at my local gym. I enjoyed the job, but I’d been there for a few years, I’d never lived in a different town and I’d never been abroad. I really liked the idea of traveling and seeing the world.
I looked on the Internet and found a website with hundreds of jobs on cruise ships. I applied for a few jobs but didn’t get any. I then decided to give up my job in the gym and go on a trip around Australia. I wanted to get some experience of traveling. My boss was great and said I could go back at any time, but luckily, when I returned from my trip, I got the next job I applied for. It was as a fitness instructor on a cruise ship going to the Caribbean.
Life on a cruise ship is busy, but that’s what makes it exciting. A typical cruise ship has hundreds of employees from sailors to waiters and hairdressers to tour guides. I love the variety of my work. I teach aerobics, yoga, and fitness and I’m also a personal trainer in the gym. I work twelve hours a day and have two days off per cruise for sightseeing, but that’s enough for me. It’s always great to come home because I miss my friends and family, but then I love leaving again too.
Which of the following is true about Mark before he joined the cruise ship?
He rarely lived abroad a few years ago.
Why did Mark give up his first job?
He was offered a job on a cruise ship.
He decided to go to the Caribbean.
He applied for his desired job.
What does he find most difficult at work?
Working long hours
Being away from home
Being busy and tired all day
Teaching so many activities

Dear Mr. Collins,
I'm happy to say I've finally finished my essay for the city contest, and I'm really pleased with it. But before submitting it, I noticed I need to turn in a copy graded by an English teacher. Since you suggested the contest to me, I was hoping you might be willing to look it over. It wasn't written for your class, but I'm sure you'd give me useful feedback. It's short, so it shouldn't take long.
If you don't have time, do you know another teacher who might help? The rules just say the essay must be graded by an English teacher in the Fairview school system. I only moved here this year, so you're really the only teacher I know. My old teachers would probably help, but they don't teach in Fairview, and I've lost touch with them.
I'd be glad to email you the essay or bring a printed copy to school. I know you're busy, but I'd really appreciate your help - I'd love to enter this contest. Thank you so much.
Sincerely,
Rachel
Why did Rachel write this e-mail?
Why couldn't Rachel send an e-mail to other teachers to ask for help?
Her old teachers don't teach in the school system the contest requires.
She didn't think her old teachers would be willing to help her.
The contest rules only allowed one teacher to grade each essay.
She didn't have the email addresses of any other teachers.
Read the following text and choose the correct answer to each question.
In 16th-century France, people used to mark the start of the new year on April 1st. The celebrations looked a lot like today's New Year's festivities - parties, dancing, and staying up late into the night. Then, in 1582, Pope Gregory brought in a new calendar for the Christian world, which moved the start of the year to January 1st instead. But not everyone got the news right away, and some people didn't believe the change was real. These people kept celebrating the new year on April 1st, just like before.
Because of this, they became an easy target for teasing. People would play pranks on them, send them on pointless errands, or trick them into believing something untrue. That's how they earned the nickname "April's fools."
Even now, many people keep the tradition going by playing jokes on friends and family every April 1st. One classic trick is swapping the sugar in a sugar bowl for salt. Some college students take it further by printing fake headlines in their school newspaper like announcing a made-up giveaway on campus. Most of these jokes are meant purely for fun, not to upset anyone. The best April Fool's prank is the kind that makes everyone laugh, especially the person who got tricked.
Why did some people keep celebrating the new year on April 1st?
They believed April was a more suitable time to start a new year.
Pope Gregory allowed people to choose between the two calendar dates.
News of the calendar change hadn't reached them or they doubted it was real.
They wanted to avoid celebrating on the same day as other countries.
Why does the passage mention the fake giveaway headline?
It shows how news of the calendar spread.
It shows how the prank tradition continues today.
It warns that such pranks can cause real harm.
It shows college students ignore old traditions.
According to the passage, what is considered the mark of a good April Fool's joke?
It helps the person who has been tricked learn something valuable.
It requires a great deal of planning and preparation.
It leaves everyone amused, including the person who was tricked.
It involves a large number of people participating together.
The word "pointless" in paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to ______.
effortless
careless
meaningless
endless
What is the main idea of the passage?
A tradition of playful pranks grew out of confusion over a calendar change.
Pope Gregory created April Fool's Day to celebrate the new calendar.
French people in the 1500s enjoyed dancing more than any other custom.
College students invented April Fool's Day as a way to have fun at school.
