A Bird Taking Shelter

Hana and Wren were sitting on the porch when the rain started pouring down. Suddenly, something fluttered near their feet - a large, colorful bird with bright green and yellow feathers.

"Whoa, what kind of bird is that?" Wren asked, staring at it in surprise.

The bird looked exhausted, its feathers soaked from the rain. It didn't try to fly away, just huddled closer to the wall, shivering slightly.

"It's not scared of us at all," Hana said. "Maybe it's used to people."

Wren grabbed an old towel from inside and laid it near the bird, which hopped onto it and slowly calmed down.

"We should find its owner. Someone's probably looking for it," Hana said. They took a photo and posted it online, asking if anyone recognized the bird.

Within an hour, someone replied - a worker from the city zoo. "That's one of our macaws! It escaped during repairs on its enclosure yesterday. We've been searching everywhere!"

The zookeeper arrived shortly after and thanked the girls warmly. "You have no idea how happy this bird's caretaker will be," she said, gently placing the macaw into a travel cage.

Which of the following is NOT true, based on the story?

  • The girls waited several days before finding the bird's owner.

  • The bird calmed down after being given a dry towel.

  • The bird escaped from the zoo during enclosure repairs.

  • A zoo worker came to pick up the bird in person.

Why does the story mention that the bird "didn't try to fly away"?

  • To explain why the girls decided to keep it as a pet.

  • To show that the bird's wings were injured from the rain.

  • To hint that the bird was actually trained to stay still.

  • To suggest that the bird felt safe or too tired to escape.

What were Hana and Wren doing when they first saw the bird?

  • Walking home from school

  • Sitting on the porch

  • Standing near the entrance of the city zoo

  • Sitting inside their house looking out the window

Dear Uncle Marco,

I finally finished my science project about volcanoes, and I wanted to thank you for helping me find that old chemistry set in your garage last month. At first, I was nervous because Mrs. Lin, my teacher, said only the top three projects out of the whole class would be shown at the school science fair. I worked on mine every evening for almost two weeks, even when my friends invited me to play basketball after school instead.

When Mrs. Lin announced the winners yesterday afternoon, my project was chosen as one of the three! I called Mom right away, but she said I should be the one to share the news with you myself, since you were the person who believed I could actually do it.

Thank you again for everything.

Your nephew,

Diego

Why does Diego mention that his friends invited him to play basketball?

  • To show how much effort and sacrifice he put into the project
  • To complain that his friends did not support him enough
  • To explain why he was too tired to finish on time
  • To ask his uncle for advice on managing his free time

What can be inferred about why Diego wanted to tell Uncle Marco the news himself?

  • He wanted to personally thank the person who encouraged him.

  • He did not trust his mother to explain it correctly.

  • He wanted to surprise his uncle before anyone else did.

  • He was worried his uncle would not believe the news.

Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the questions.

Mercury is the smallest member of the sun’s family. It is only 3,100 miles across. It is also the sun’s swiftest planet. Its yearly journey round the sun is only 85 days. Mercury always keeps one side towards the sun. On this side it is always day, on the other side it is always night. We only see the lighted side.

Mercury appears to us like a yellowish-orange star. The nearest planet to the sun, it is always seen near the sun, either just before sunrise or soon after sunset. People sometimes call Mercury the morning star or evening star.

Mercury is half the size of the earth. Because it is much lighter, it has much less gravity. If you can visit Mercury in a spaceship, you will find it a strange world. Its low gravity makes you feel very light. If your weight on earth is 100 pounds, your weight on Mercury is only 27 pounds. Looking at the sun from Mercury, you can see that it’s much more brilliant than it is seen from the earth. And the yellow center of the sun appears three times bigger from Mercury. On its lighted side, Mercury’s temperature is about 300 degrees centigrade. But the dark side is extremely cold, 150 degrees below zero so Mercury is probably the coldest as well as the hottest of the planets.

What is the passage mainly about?

  • Mercury

  • Gravity

  • Solar system

  • Members in Solar system

The word "swiftest" in paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to _____.

  • coldest
  • hottest
  • biggest
  • fastest

We cannot see the dark side of Mercury because _____.

  • it always appears just before sunrise or soon after sunset

  • it maintains one side toward the sun at all times

  • it is too far for us to see

  • it moves very fast

The word "it" in paragraph 3 refers to _____.

  • the sun

  • gravity

  • the earth

  • Mercury

On the lighted side, Mercury’s temperature is _____.

  • 150 degrees centigrade

  • 100 degrees centigrade

  • 300 degrees centigrade
  • zero degree centigrade

Write a paragraph (about 100 words) about your favorite school activity.
