Read the letter. Answer the questions.

Dear Grandpa,

Yesterday was Earth Day and I learned how to save the earth at school. I never knew that plastic didn't decay for so many years. I use PET bottles and paper cups every day, and now I realize I have been making so much waste every day. I also learned how to recycle, so I made this pretty postcard with a tissue box to write this message to you.

Christmas is coming soon, and I can't wait to visit you. See you soon.

Best wishes,

Helena

What did Helena learn yesterday?

  • How paper cups are made
  • How to protect the Earth
  • How to make plastic bottles

What did Helena make?

  • A tissue box
  • A plastic bottle
  • A postcard

Read the story and answer the questions.

"Today is your first day of school and I want you to look handsome," my mom said as she forced a collared shirt over my head.

"I don't want to wear the blue one. I like the red one. It is more comfortable," I said as I tried to grab my favorite shirt.

"The red one is old and has stains. It is the first day of school, so you have to wear a new shirt."

I hated the way the shirt looked, but she would not be defeated. I didn't like the first day of school because everyone expected you to be dressed up. All I wanted to do was wear my normal clothes.

"Here is your lunch box. I packed you all healthy foods — a sandwich, juice, and two apples. You can share one of the apples if you want, but I don't want you to eat sweets. Don't try and trade with the other kids. I have already told your teachers to watch out, so don't even try," she said.

"Defeated again," I thought to myself. I hated never having sweet things in my lunch box, but my mom never packed them.

When I got to school, my best friend was waiting for me outside the playground. There was a soccer game being started and we hurried to join. We only got to play ten minutes before the bell rang but it was awesome. I scored three goals.

Then I looked down at my shirt. It was torn apart. I had ripped part of it and it was covered in dirt.

"My mom is going to kill me!" I said to my friend. "She told me I had to look neat for my first day of class."

"It's okay. The soccer coach was watching you play and he is definitely going to ask you to try out for the team now. Just tell your mom you had to," my friend said, smiling.

He was right. My mom was mad when she picked me up but she was excited that I got picked for the team. I think that it was a pretty good first day.

Why does the boy hate the first day of school?

  • Because his mom forced him to go to school
  • Because he had to eat healthy foods at lunch time
  • Because he could not play soccer when he got to school

According to the passage, all of the following statements are true about the boy EXCEPT _______.

  • he is a good soccer player
  • he was asked to join the soccer team

Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the following questions.

Table manners differ around the world. If you visit your friends’ home for a meal, it’s good to know about the customs they follow.

If you are invited to a Moroccan's home, bring a gift of sweet pastries, nuts, figs, dates, or flowers to the hostess. In many traditional homes, people often sit on the floor to eat a meal. Often, everyone shares food from the same 10 plates. The plate is put in the center of the table. Usually, everyone also drinks water from the same glass. Only eat the food in front of you. Don’t reach across someone for food. It is common to use your fingers and small pieces of bread to eat food. Use only your right hand to eat. Don’t say “no” to food. If the host of the meal offers you food or drink, take some and try a little. In many Moroccan homes, it is common to take off your shoes.

Tanzania is known for its fresh fish and spices. Don’t act scared if your meal comes with its head still on the plate. It is polite to try a bite of everything. In many Tanzanian homes, people sit at a table on small stools to eat. It is OK to eat with your right hand, using bread or chapati to pick up food. Everyone may take food from the same plate, but it is not usual for people to share drinks. You may compliment the cook on a delicious meal, but don’t exaggerate. In some parts of Tanzania, men and women will sit at different tables. Also remember: It is common to take off your shoes in the home, but it is rude to show the bottom of your foot.
