Taking photographs ruins the memory, research finds

Our obsession with recording every detail of our happiest moments could negatively affect our ability to remember them, to new research.

Dr. Linda Henkel, from Fairfield University, Connecticut, described this as the ‘photo-taking impairment effect’. She said, ‘People often whip out their cameras almost mindlessly to capture a moment, to the point that they are missing what is happening right in front of them. When people rely technology to remember for them – counting on the camera to record the event and thus not needing to attend to it fully – it can have a negative on how well they remember their experiences.’

In Dr. Henkel’s experiment, a group of university students was led on a tour of a museum and asked to either photograph or try to remember objects on display. The next day student’s memory was tested. The results showed that people were less accurate in the objects they had photographed compared with those they had only looked at.

Read the following passage then choose the best answer to each question below.

My name is James, I'm fourteen, and I moved to this town with my family three months ago. My parents lived here when they were young, but my brother and I didn't know anyone here except a few aunts and uncles we'd met when we'd spent a couple of weeks with my grandparents, during school holidays. When I started school, one of my cousins, Sophie, who was in my class, was very friendly for the first week and I was happy to have a friend in a strange place. Then, for no reason, she stopped talking to me and I felt very hurt and lonely for several weeks.

In the end, I made some more friends and since I got to know them, I've been fine. Now Sophie is having a disco party tor her birthday next week and she has invited me. I don't want to go. My brother says he heard someone say she only asked me because her parents said she had to. But my mum and dad say it would be rude not to accept. Some of my new friends are invited, too. How can I show Sophie that she can't behave so badly towards me without causing a family quarrel?
