Dear Store Manager,

I am writing to formally complain about the terrible customer service I experienced at your downtown branch yesterday. I have been a loyal client for years, but this incident was the final for me. I strongly demand that you disciplinary action against this employee immediately. The Sunk Cost Fallacy: Knowing When to Quit

Have you ever continued watching a terrible movie simply because you had already paid for the ticket? This psychological trap is known as the sunk cost fallacy. Human beings naturally hate losing, which explains why we are often reluctant to a failing project once we have invested time or money into it. However, continuing to spend resources on a bad plan is not logical. No matter how much you have already lost, you cannot magically that money. Financial experts advise that investors businesses are doing poorly must cut their losses immediately. It is high time people that walking away from a bad situation is not a sign of weakness. By understanding this trap, you can prevent yourself from victim to serious financial problems.

Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the questions.

Have you ever bought a cheap t-shirt, worn it once, and then pushed it to the back of your closet? You are not alone. Each year, the global fashion industry produces around 100 billion items of clothing - far more than the world's population could ever reasonably wear. And the speed at which these items are made, sold, and thrown away is increasing.

The business model is simple and effective. [I] Brands release new styles almost every week at very low prices, making it easy for shoppers to update their wardrobes constantly without spending much money. [II] What most consumers do not see, however, is what happens at the other end of the supply chain. [III] Producing a single pair of jeans requires thousands of litres of water, and factories that make cheap clothing regularly release harmful chemicals into local rivers. [IV] When these items go out of style - which, by design, happens quickly - the majority end up in landfill sites.

The human cost is just as serious. To keep prices as low as possible, many brands rely on factories in developing countries where labour laws are weak. The workers who make these clothes frequently work long hours in unsafe conditions for very little pay, under pressure to produce as many garments as possible to meet the demands of international buyers.

What makes this system particularly difficult to challenge is that the low prices which cause so much damage are also the main reason millions of people choose these brands in the first place.

A different approach, known as "slow fashion," has been gaining attention in recent years. Rather than buying cheap items every few weeks, its supporters choose fewer, better-made clothes that are produced more responsibly. Some cities have also seen a rise in second-hand markets and clothing swap events, particularly among younger shoppers who are increasingly aware of where their clothes come from.

The price tag on a ten-dollar t-shirt may look straightforward. The true cost, it turns out, is considerably harder to calculate.

According to the passage, all of the following are negative impacts of fast fashion EXCEPT _____.

  • excessive water consumption

  • river pollution

  • expensive retail prices

  • poor working conditions

What can be inferred about why fast fashion brands use factories in developing countries?

  • To minimize costs and maximize profit

  • To provide better jobs for local people

  • To avoid polluting their own nations' rivers

  • To ensure clothes are made with high quality

Where does the following sentence best fit in paragraph 2?

"As a result, the natural ecosystems surrounding these manufacturing sites suffer from severe long-term degradation."

  • [I]

  • [II]

  • [III]

  • [IV]

What does the author imply by the statement "The true cost, it turns out, is considerably harder to calculate" in the final paragraph?

  • The damage to rivers and water supplies is the only hidden cost of cheap clothing.
  • Consumers need better math skills to work out the final price of their clothes.

  • Fast fashion brands deliberately hide the real price tags from their shoppers.
  • The real price of cheap clothing is paid by workers and the environment, not shown on the tag.

Which of the following best paraphrases the underlined sentence in paragraph 5?

"Rather than buying cheap items every few weeks, its supporters choose fewer, better-made clothes that are produced more responsibly."

  • Rather than buying responsibly made clothes, supporters decide to just buy a few cheap items every week.

  • These shoppers buy fewer clothes overall, but they make sure their cheap items are produced responsibly.

  • Supporters carefully choose to buy cheap clothes every few weeks so they can afford better items later.

  • Instead of getting cheap clothes often, these buyers prefer a small number of high-quality, ethically made items.

What is the main idea of the passage?

  • The environmental dangers of clothing landfills.
  • How slow fashion improves factory working conditions.
  • The hidden costs of fast fashion and a new solution.
  • Why fast fashion is so popular in developing countries.
