Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the questions.

Space Tourism: The Final Frontier for the Few?

In 2021, a 90-year-old actor became the oldest person ever to travel to space. He did not train for years or work for a government space agency. He simply bought a seat on a rocket owned by a private company. The flight lasted ten minutes. The ticket cost an estimated 450,000 dollars. [I] When he landed, he was in tears. The rest of the world, however, had rather mixed feelings.

Space tourism, the idea of ordinary people travelling beyond Earth's atmosphere for leisure, was once the kind of thing that only existed in science fiction films. Today, it is a real and growing industry. Companies such as Virgin Galactic, Blue Origin, and SpaceX have all developed vehicles that are designed to carry paying passengers into space or to the edge of it. [II] According to industry reports, the global space tourism market is expected to be worth over three billion dollars by 2030.

Supporters of space tourism argue that it is doing something genuinely valuable. Private investment, they say, is pushing rocket technology forward faster than government programmes ever could. [III] The experiences reported by passengers, a powerful sense of how small and fragile the Earth looks from above, have also led many travellers to speak more publicly about the need to protect the planet's environment. [IV]

Critics, however, are far less convinced. The carbon emissions produced by a single rocket launch are significantly higher than those of a long-haul aeroplane flight. At a time when climate change is already one of the world's most serious problems, using large amounts of fuel to send wealthy individuals on a ten-minute joyride is difficult for many people to accept. There is also a deeper concern - that space tourism, in its current form, is an extreme example of a world where extraordinary experiences are available only to those who can afford to pay for them.

For now, the stars remain out of reach for most people. The question worth asking is whether they should stay that way.

What is the main idea of the passage?

  • The biography of a 90-year-old actor who fulfilled his dream of going to space.
  • A technical comparison of rockets built by SpaceX, Blue Origin, and Virgin Galactic.
  • An overview of the rising space tourism industry and the debate over its benefits and costs.
  • A prediction that government space agencies will soon be replaced by private companies.

Where should the following sentence be placed in the passage?

"This high price tag means that, for now, space is a destination reserved for the global elite."

  • [I]

  • [II]

  • [III]

  • [IV]

Which sentence best paraphrases the underlined sentence in paragraph 3?

"Supporters of space tourism argue that it is doing something genuinely valuable."

  • In the view of its supporters, space tourism brings about real value.

  • According to its supporters, the industry is far too costly to be worthwhile.

  • Its supporters insist that only governments can profit from space tourism.

  • To its critics, space tourism wastes resources that are genuinely valuable.

According to the passage, all of the following are true EXCEPT that _____ .

  • a rocket launch releases more carbon emissions than a long-distance aeroplane flight
  • the market for space tourism is expected to reach over $3 billion by the year 2030
  • the 90-year-old actor spent many years training with a government agency before his flight
  • some passengers feel a stronger need to protect the Earth after seeing it from above

It can be inferred from paragraph 1 that the world's "mixed feelings" were likely caused by _____ .

  • a fear that the 90-year-old actor was not healthy enough to survive the landing
  • the fact that private companies are not as safe as government space agencies

  • a disappointment that the flight only lasted ten minutes instead of several days
  • the contrast between the amazing technological achievement and its massive cost

What can be inferred about the relationship between space tourism and the environment?

  • Future rockets will likely use the same fuel as aeroplanes to reduce pollution.
  • Private companies have already found a way to make space travel carbon-neutral.
  • There is a contradiction between the pollution caused by rockets and the passengers' desire to protect Earth.
  • Most critics believe that the environmental benefits of space travel are greater than the damage it causes.
