Read the passage and choose the best answer to fill each gap.

The Illusion of Memory

Human memory is a fascinating but highly flawed system. Most people assume that their brains record past events perfectly, a video camera. However, neuroscientists have proven that this is simply not true. Every time you a specific event, your brain actively rebuilds the details from scratch. Consequently, your mind can easily tricks on you, adding elements that never actually happened. In fact, a false memory can feel just as vivid as a genuine one. This explains eyewitness testimonies in court are sometimes unreliable. We must accept that human memory is not a permanent archive. Recognizing this vulnerability allows us to show more empathy in daily arguments, instead of stubbornly that our personal version of the past is the absolute truth.

Read the passage below and choose the best answer to each question.

The train carriage is full. Two people sit across from each other for forty minutes, both staring at their phones, neither saying a word. At the next stop, one of them gets off. The moment passes. The connection that never happened disappears along with it. This is one of the most common human experiences of modern life - and according to researchers, it may be costing us more than we realise.

[I] A series of studies carried out by psychologists at the University of Chicago found something that genuinely surprised them. When commuters were asked to start a conversation with a stranger on public transport, the majority reported feeling significantly happier by the end of their journey compared to those who had travelled in silence. The conversations did not need to be deep or meaningful - a comment about the weather, a question about directions, or simply a friendly remark was enough to produce a noticeable improvement in mood. [II] What made the findings even more interesting was that most participants had predicted the opposite result before the experiment began. They expected the interaction to feel awkward and uncomfortable. In reality, almost none of them did.

So why do we avoid it so consistently? Researchers suggest that people tend to overestimate how difficult talking to strangers will be, and underestimate how willing others actually are to respond. [III] In busy urban environments, keeping to oneself has also become a kind of unwritten social rule - one that nobody officially agreed to, but almost everyone follows without question. The habit of looking at a phone has made this avoidance easier and more natural than ever before, giving people a socially acceptable reason to remain closed off from the world around them.

There is also a loneliness factor that researchers believe is connected to this behaviour. [IV] Studies show that feelings of loneliness among people living in large cities have increased steadily over the past two decades - even as those same cities have become more crowded and more connected through technology.

What the research points to is a quiet gap between what people believe will make them feel good and what actually does — and brief, unplanned human connection appears to fall firmly into the second category. None of this means that every train journey should become a long conversation. But the next time a stranger catches your eye and almost smiles, it may be worth considering what happens if you simply smile back.

What is the main idea of the passage?

  • Train journeys are costing us more than we realise due to modern technology.
  • Brief conversations with strangers can make people happier than they expect.
  • Mobile phones are the main cause of loneliness in modern crowded cities.
  • Psychologists recommend having deep and meaningful conversations on trains.

It can be inferred from paragraph 2 that ______.

  • people are usually very good at predicting how a social experience will make them feel
  • the commuters' fears about talking to strangers turned out to be largely mistaken
  • deep and meaningful conversations are the only way to improve one's mood on a train
  • most participants refused to take part in the experiment because it was awkward

Which sentence best paraphrases the underlined sentence in paragraph 3?

"Researchers suggest that people tend to overestimate how difficult talking to strangers will be, and underestimate how willing others actually are to respond."

  • People assume starting a conversation is easy, but strangers rarely want to respond.
  • People expect strangers to be difficult, which makes others genuinely unwilling to reply.
  • People think starting a conversation is harder than it actually is, and assume others are less open than they really are.
  • People find it very difficult to talk to strangers because people in cities are always unwilling to answer them.

Where should the following sentence be placed in the passage?

"This may explain why so many people stay silent even when they would benefit from speaking."

  • [I]
  • [II]
  • [III]
  • [IV]

It can be inferred from paragraph 4 that ______.

  • technology has successfully reduced loneliness in large cities over the past two decades
  • people living in small towns are far lonelier than those living in large, crowded cities
  • feelings of loneliness in urban areas have stayed exactly the same despite technological advances
  • being physically surrounded by crowds does not guarantee that a person feels connected

According to the passage, all of the following are true EXCEPT that ______.

  • most participants expected talking to a stranger to feel uncomfortable
  • a simple remark about the weather was enough to improve people's mood
  • the researchers offered participants money to talk to strangers on the train
  • feelings of loneliness in big cities have risen over the past two decades
