Billions of people still breathe unhealthy air

According to the 2022 update of the World Health Organization's (WHO) air quality database, all of the world’s population air that is polluted beyond the accepted limits. A record number of over 6000 cities in 117 countries are now monitoring air quality, but the people living in them are still taking in levels of nitrogen dioxide (NO2), a common urban pollutant, with people in low and middle-income countries suffering the highest exposures.

The findings have made the World Health Organization highlight the importance of limiting fossil fuel use and taking other steps to air pollution levels.

"After surviving a pandemic, it is unacceptable to still have 7 million preventable deaths and countless preventable lost years of good health air pollution. That's what we're saying when we look at the mountain of air pollution data, evidence, and solutions available. Yet too many investments are still being sunk into a polluted environment rather than in clean, healthy air," said Dr. Maria Neira, WHO Director, Department of Environment, Climate Change and Health. World Health Day, marked on 7 April, will focus global attention on urgent actions needed to keep humans and the planet healthy and foster a movement to create societies focused on well-being.

Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the questions.

Although speech is the most advanced form of communication, there are many ways of communicating without using speech. Signals, signs, symbols, and gestures may be found in every known culture. The basic function of signal is to impinge upon the environment in such a way that it attracts attention, as, for example, the dots and dashes of a telegraph circuit. Coded to refer to speech, the potential for communication is very great. Less adaptable to the codification of words, signs also contain meaning in and of themselves. A stop sign or a barber pole conveys meaning quickly and conveniently.

Symbols are more difficult to describe than either signals or signs because of their intricate relationship with the receiver’s cultural perceptions. In some cultures, applauding in a theater provides performers with an auditory symbol of approval. Gestures such as waving and handshaking also communicate certain cultural messages.

Although signals, signs, symbols, and gestures are very useful, they do have a major disadvantage in communication. They usually do not allow ideas to be shared without the sender being directly adjacent to the receiver. Without an exchange of ideas, interaction comes to a halt. As a result, means of communication intended to be used for long distances and extended periods must be based upon speech. To radio, television, and the telephone, one must add fax, paging systems, electronic mail, and the Internet, and no one doubts but that there are more means of communication on the horizon.

Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

  • Gestures
  • Signs and signals
  • Speech
  • Communication

  • way
  • environment
  • function
  • signal

The word “intricate” in paragraph 2 could best be replaced by _____.

  • inefficient
  • complicated
  • historical
  • uncertain

Why were the telephone, radio, and television invented?

  • Because people were unable to understand signs, signals, and symbols.
  • Because people believed that signs, signals, and symbols were obsolete.
  • Because people wanted to communicate across long distances.
  • Because people believed they could completely replace face-to-face communication.

What is the purpose of the author when mentioning "a barber pole"?

  • To describe the process of creating signs
  • To illustrate how a barber decodes signs
  • To describe the encoding of information from text to signs
  • To illustrate the utility of using signs

Thailand offers near perfect conditions for snorkeling and diving among the beautiful coral reefs. There are many resorts where you can rent equipment or sign for a diving course. However, very few people are that committed to environmental concerns, so the best way to minimize your impact is by not touching the reefs or by asking your boatman not to anchor in the middle of . Don't buy coral souvenirs, because tourist demand only encourages local people to destroy the reefs so as to obtain the coral.
