GOING INSIDE BLACK HOLES

One of the strangest phenomena in the universe is the black hole. For years, scientists have studied black holes in an to better understand how they function. Like vacuum cleaners, black holes will suck up anything crosses their path. The incredible sucking power that black holes generate from gravity. They can quickly swallow up anything including planets, space debris, and anything else imaginable. Even light cannot escape the of black holes. Since they are able to pull in light, black holes are nearly impossible to see even with high-powered telescopes. , scientists are able to detect the presence of black holes in space because of the effect on an observed area.

Black holes can originate in a few ways. One type of black holes occur when a star comes to the end of its lifecycle and it dies in a supernova . They can also occur when the mass of a neutron star becomes so great that it collapses in on itself. Black holes may also occur when several large and dense stars collide one another in space.

Read the passage then choose the best answer to each question.

Machines known as engines convert energy into mechanical motion, often relying on fuel for operation. They are commonly used to power vehicles like cars. These vehicles most commonly have an internal combustion engine and rely upon gasoline for power. However, there are several types of engines that can use alternative energy sources. Many people are trying to switch to them because gasoline, which is a fossil fuel, creates pollution and is also a nonrenewable resource. Alternative energy sources, meanwhile, create less pollution and are often renewable sources of energy.

These days, engines that are able to burn biofuels are somewhat common. Biofuels are fuels that are made from biological materials, such as corn, soybeans, and sugarcane. Biofuels burn cleaner and produce less pollution compared to fossil fuels. In countries like Brazil, biofuel-powered cars are standard. In fact, most of the cars in Brazil have engines that can operate on either gasoline or biofuel.

The second type of alternative engine is the electric engine. Cars with electric engines have been common for decades. These cars combine both gasoline and electric engines, with the gasoline engine used for high-speed highway driving and the electric engine employed for city commuting. One benefit of hybrid cars is that as the gasoline-powered engine runs, it simultaneously recharges the electric engine.

The third type of alternative engine is the hydrogen engine. It utilizes hydrogen fuel cells, which convert hydrogen into electricity that can power the car. These days, there are many cars and buses that rely upon hydrogen engines. However, there are some problems associated with this type of engine. The hydrogen used in the engine must be processed from other materials, and it is also difficult to store. As a result, vehicles that run on hydrogen are expensive.

Based on paragraph 1, what is probably true about alternative energy sources?

  • They have a great deal to produce.
  • They cost a great deal to produce.
  • They are less common than fossil fuels.
  • They are rejected by the majority of people.

What does the author say about biofuels in Brazil?

  • They are used more than gasoline.
  • Many Brazilians approve of them.
  • They were first discovered there.
  • Many cars there can run on them.

In paragraph 3, the word "recharges" is closest in meaning to ____.

  • resumes
  • repels
  • reveals
  • refreshes

In the passage, all of the following statements about hydrogen engines are mentioned EXCEPT ____.

  • they cost a lot of money to operate
  • there are problems with their fuel source
  • cars and buses can both utilize them
  • renewing their batteries is difficult

The author uses corn, soybeans, and sugarcane as examples of _____.

  • crops that are grown in Brazil
  • things that can be turned into biofuels
  • biological materials that grow quickly
  • plants that can be eaten by people

When do drivers use electric engines in hybrid cars?

  • When they drive in the countryside
  • When they drive on city streets
  • When they drive on highways
  • When they drive on expressways

The word "it" in the final paragraph refers to _____.

  • the biofuel-powered engine
  • the gasoline-powered engine
  • the electric engine
  • the hydrogen engine

What would be the best title for the passage?

  • Biofuels: Can they really run car engines?
  • Cars to use internal combustion engines
  • New types of alternative energy engines
  • What is the best type of vehicle engine?

Should we believe what we read?

When we read a newspaper story about something that's happened, we usually presume that it's (FACT) accurate. We tend to believe that the reporter has done his or her research, and that we can rely on the words written. However, some sections of the media see things rather differently. There is a saying used in the tabloid newspaper industry in Britain: 'The (TRUE) doesn't sell newspapers'. For tabloids, the aim is to create stories that shock the reader, even if they're not true. Journalists who work for these papers often feel that their (RESPONSIBLE) is not so much to present the facts as to produce the most interesting story possible.

Can any form of spoken or written (COMMUNICATE) accurately present reality? Perhaps not. Producing a text always involves a choice. Which words we use and how we express them reflect our (PERSON) opinion. Indeed, we shouldn't even completely believe what we see on TV as the selection of images shown or not shown will affect our response.
