Sandpaper is a thick,  piece of paper. It feels like a man's cheek before he shaves. It also feels like a cat’s tongue, but it is much, much scratchier.

Today, sandpaper is made of small crystals. The crystals are very sharp. They're sharp enough to cut wood. There are hundreds of them. They work like very tiny saws. 

When you rub sandpaper on wood, the tiny saws cut the wood’s surface. They remove the surface a little at a time. This action is called sanding.

People wood for many reasons. It takes away and scratches. It also makes wood easier to paint.

You can sand a piece of wood by hand or by using a special tool. You sand off the rough edges and sand down the bumps. When you are done, the wood will be very smooth. You can touch it and not get splinters!
