Do you know?

  • The first airplane, the Wright Flyer, was flown for a sustained period and under control by Orville Wright and Wilbur Wright in December 1903.
  • These days commercial planes can fly to a maximum of 13,716 metres but some private jets can fly to about 15,500 metres.

Let's explore more about this!

Let's learn some new words before you read the passage:

Listen and complete the passage.

generate force incredibly underneath
curved wings roar

Have you ever looked out your window and seen clouds all around you? You must have been up in an airplane! Airplanes are big, so how do they fly through the air?

Airplanes can fly because they a called lift. Lift begins to happen when the airplane’s engines into life. The strong engines push the airplane forward. The wheels on the plane help it move faster.

As the plane's engines push the forward, air moves over and under them. The air moving under the wings is strong enough to hold the plane up. If you cut a slice across an airplane wing, you see it is over the top and flat on the bottom. This difference creates a stronger force of air the wing, which pushes it upward.

When you are up in the sky, you can see the earth below you. You may see mountains or oceans. You may see only clouds. That is because you are flying so high that the clouds cover the land. Way up high, the sun is always shining during the day. If it is nighttime, the stars and moon are out. The view from the clouds is very special.

Humans have dreamed of soaring through the clouds for centuries. Even people in Ancient Greece and China tried to invent ways for people to fly in the sky thousands of years ago. It wasn't until the 1900s that more modern airplanes like those we use today were invented. Many engineers and designers, like the Wright brothers, spent years testing different kinds of airplane engines, wings, and controls.

Since then, engineers have designed planes to be used in wars, for shipping goods, and to help people travel long distances in less time. Today, over 100,000 planes take flight around the world. That means that there are thousands of people soaring through the clouds at this very moment!

Why does an airplane have the difference between the top and the bottom of its wing?

  • to ensure the plane not to be fallen when flying
  • to waste less metal in the construction of planes
  • to keep the airplane balanced when landing
  • to create pressure to force the plane upward

What can we infer from the fifth paragraph?

  • The first airplanes were invented by the Wright brothers.
  • People still use types of aircrafts that were invented in ancient times.
  • Wright brothers devoted all their life to inventing modern airplanes.
  • The 1900s saw the development of the first modern aircrafts after years.

What is NOT true according to the article?

  • The plane is pushed forward by its powerful engines.
  • Lift is the force that gives airplanes their ability to fly.
  • The air beneath the wings stops planes from holding up.
  • The wheels help to boost the airplane's speed.

According to the fourth paragraph, you can see only clouds because _____.

  • the sky is too bright in daytime and dark in nighttime
  • the sun is always shining that makes your eyes hard to see
  • the land becomes smaller and smaller as you fly so high
  • the land is hidden by clouds as you fly at certain altitudes

What is the main idea of the article?

  • The article is about different shapes and sizes of clouds.
  • The article is about airplanes and their development.
  • The article is about the flights and what we can see from an airplane.
  • The article is about airplanes and the best pictures we can see while flying.
