On the evening of 26 September 2019, Geneva's streets in Switzerland went dark. This was not due to an electricity problem but to let people look at the stars. Usually, this is hard in cities because of light pollution.

Light pollution happens when light from streetlamps or buildings makes the night less dark. It causes many problems. Animals sleep less because they think it is still daytime. Birds that travel to warmer places in the autumn need to see the moon and stars, but light pollution makes this hard. Insects and birds often fly towards lights at night, hit buildings, and die.

Light pollution is also bad for us. It can stop us from sleeping well and give us headaches. We don't see the same sky as people in the past. Many people have never seen the Milky Way, which is one of the greatest sights.

Reducing light pollution is not hard. We can turn off lights when not needed and use curtains. With less light pollution, we can enjoy the beauty of the night sky again.
