Read the following passage then choose the best answer to each question below.

New York is called “the Big Apple”. Maybe it is not exactly like an apple, it's certainly very big. There are too many people, that's the problem. The streets are always full of cars and trucks; you can never find a place to park.

Travelling around is never easy in the city. If you have enough money, you can take a taxi. New York cabs are yellow. They look all the same, however, the drivers are very different. Some were born and raised in New York, but many are newcomers to the United States. A few drive slowly, but most go very fast. Cab driving is a difficult job. It can be also dangerous because hieves often try to steal the drivers' money and drivers sometimes get hurt.

If you don't want to take a taxi, you can go by bus or you can take a subway. The subway is quick and it's cheap, but parts of it are old and dirty. Lights don't always work and there are often fires on the track. On some subway lines, there are new, clean, silver trains but you can't see the color of the old trains easily. There is too much dirt and too much graffiti, inside and outside.

What is a common problem mentioned in New York City?

  • There are too many apples.
  • There are not enough taxis.
  • There is too little public transportation.
  • There are too many people and traffic.

What color are New York taxis?

  • Blue
  • Green
  • Yellow
  • Red

What is TRUE about the experience of riding in a New York taxi?

  • All drivers are very cautious and polite.
  • The speed of the ride depends on the driver.
  • Only local-born drivers work as cab drivers.
  • It’s always the safest option for traveling.

The word "subway" in the third paragraph is CLOSEST in meaning to _____.

  • underground
  • station
  • light bulb

Which of the following best describes the condition of the old subway trains?

  • They are cheap and efficient.
  • They are brightly colored and easy to spot.
  • They are well-maintained and clean.
  • They are so dirty and have much graffiti.

Learning a new language means learning thousands of new words and grammatical structures! But it can be really difficult to memorize words in a new language. Here are some to help you remember vocabulary:

  • Keep an organized vocabulary notebook.
  • Look the words again after 24 hours, after one week and after one month.
  • Read, read, read. The more times you ‘see’ a word the more easily you will remember it.
  • Use the new words. You need a new word about ten times before you remember it!
  • Do word puzzles and games like crosswords, anagrams and word searches.
  • Make word cards and take with you so you can read on the bus or when you are waiting for your friends.
  • Learn words with a friend. It can be more fun and easier to learn with someone else.
  • Learn how to use a dictionary.
  • Learn not too few words but not too . About eight new words a day is a good number.
