Read the following passage then choose the best answer to each question below.

Solar energy is a long lasting source of energy and it can be used almost anywhere. To generate solar energy, we only need solar cells and the sun! It is easy to install solar cells on house roofs so each user can quietly generate their own energy from home. Compared to other renewable sources, they also have many advantages. Wind and water power rely on turbines but they are noisy, expensive and easy to break down. Solar cells are totally silent and non-polluting. Because they have no moving parts, they only require a little money to maintain and have a long lifetime.

However, solar energy also has some disadvantages. We can only generate solar energy during daytime because the system depends on sunlight. Besides, solar cells require a large area to work effectively. Moreover, solar energy costs about twice as much as traditional sources such as coal, oil, and gas. Scientists hope that the costs of solar cells will reduce in the future for people to use this environmentally friendly source of energy more.

What does the passage mainly discuss?
  • Advantages and disadvantages of solar energy
  • Solar energy's advantages over other sources of energy
  • The cost of solar energy
  • Solar energy as an alternative for fossil fuels

How do solar cells compare to wind and water power?

  • They are cheaper and quieter.
  • They are noisier and more expensive.
  • They are less effective.
  • They require more money to run.

The word "they" in paragraph 1 refer to _____.

  • advantages
  • moving parts
  • turbines
  • solar cells

The word "generate" in paragraph 2 is CLOSEST in meaning to _____.

  • cause
  • choose
  • create
  • build

Why do solar cells need a big area to work?

  • To store more sunlight
  • To produce electricity better
  • To reduce pollution
  • To compete with coal and oil

Choose the correct answers in the box to complete the conversation. Write only the letter A-D in each blank.

A. I think 30% of our energy should come from solar power.

B. Using renewable sources is important for the environment.

C. It uses wind turbines to generate electricity.

D. Can you tell me about solar power?

Emma:
Hi, Tom!

Tom: Sure! Solar power comes from the sun. We use solar panels to collect energy.

Emma: That sounds interesting! How much energy do you think should come from solar power?

Tom:

Emma: What about wind power? Can you tell me about that?

Tom: Yes!

Emma: How much energy do you think we should get from wind?

Tom: I believe we should aim for 25% of our energy from wind power.

Emma: That makes sense!
