Read the following text and choose the correct answer to each of the questions.

Coral reef destruction is one of the most urgent environmental issues today, threatening marine ecosystems worldwide. Coral reefs are home to nearly 25% of all marine species and protect coastal areas from storms and erosion. Yet, human activities are rapidly destroying these weak ecosystems, putting them at risk of extinction.

One major issue is the release of pollutants into the oceans. Plastic waste, chemical runoff from agriculture, and untreated sewage harm water quality and block sunlight that corals need for survival. For instance, studies show that over 14 million tons of plastic end up in the ocean each year, suffocating coral reefs and marine life. Governments must enforce strict waste management laws to deter industries and individuals from polluting. On a smaller scale, individuals can help by reducing plastic use and participating in clean-up events, such as the recent International Coastal Cleanup Day, where volunteers removed over 100,000 pounds of trash from beaches.

Climate change also plays a huge role in reef destruction. Rising sea temperatures cause coral bleaching, where corals lose their color and die. For example, the Great Barrier Reef has lost nearly 50% of its coral since 1995 due to bleaching. To deal with this, we need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by switching to renewable energy sources like wind and solar power. Planting trees can also help absorb carbon dioxide and slow global warming.

Saving coral reefs is important for ocean health and biodiversity. By managing pollution and climate change, we can ensure coral reefs survive and continue to support marine life for generations to come. Let’s act before it’s too late!
