Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the questions.

Hey everyone! Today, I want to share a problem I noticed in my city and some smart solutions from other places.

Last week, I saw an elderly woman struggling to cross a busy street near the market. Cars didn’t stop, even at the crosswalk. Did you know? In my city, most pedestrian accidents happen because drivers ignore crosswalks. But there’s hope! I read about Seoul, South Korea, where they involved local communities to improve pedestrian safety. They painted bright blue crosswalks near schools and installed flashing lights. The result? Accidents dropped by 45% in one year! They also banned cars from speeding in these zones with strict fines. These changes not only helped children and the elderly but also made drivers more careful in busy areas.

Another issue in my city is plastic waste. Every day, thousands of plastic bags end up in our rivers. But Rwanda found a solution - they encouraged reusable bags and completely banned plastic bags in 2008. Now, their streets are 90% cleaner than before! More people also started using cloth bags because they are stronger and better for the environment.

What if we try these ideas here? Imagine safer streets and less trash! What other creative solutions have you seen? Share your thoughts!

What was the main reason for pedestrian accidents in the writer's city?

  • Poorly designed crosswalks
  • Lack of traffic signals
  • Drivers failing to stop at crosswalks
  • Too many pedestrians crossing at once

What was the impact on accidents after Seoul introduced safety measures?

  • A 30% decrease in traffic violations
  • A 45% reduction in pedestrian accidents
  • A 50% drop in speeding tickets
  • A 20% increase in crosswalk usage

The word "issue" in the third paragraph is CLOSEST in meaning to _____.

  • problem
  • method
  • question
  • part

What was Rwanda's approach to reducing plastic waste?

  • Making plastic bags even thinner
  • Building special plastic bag recycling centers
  • Asking people to burn their plastic bags
  • Promoting reusable bags and banning plastic

The word "they" in the third paragraph refers to _____.

  • cloth bags
  • plastic bags
  • people
  • streets

Rearrange these sentences to make a complete passage by filling in these blanks numbers from 1 - 8. Some blanks have been marked for you.

1 - A. I saw an accident yesterday while I was walking on the sidewalk.

- B. That's terrible! What happened after that?

- C. Yes, it does. Many people here don’t follow traffic rules. They are always in a hurry and often ignore the lights.

- D. Oh, really? What happened?

- E. Does this kind of thing often happen in your city?

- F. A motorcyclist, not wearing a helmet, was running a red light. He crashed into an old woman who was crossing the street.

- G. Everyone rushed to help her. They took the old lady to the hospital. She had a broken leg and needed immediate care.

8 - H. Oh, that sounds really dangerous. Maybe the city should have severe fines for violators. It might make people more careful.
