Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the questions.

At 395 miles (636 kilometers) long and over 5,000 feet (1,524 meters) deep, Lake Baikal in Russia is the world’s deepest freshwater lake. It contains about 20 percent of all the unfrozen freshwater on Earth and is often called the “Galápagos of Russia” because of its rich biodiversity.

Lake Baikal is home to thousands of plant and animal species, many of which cannot be found anywhere else in the world. The most famous species here are the Baikal seals, the only freshwater seals on the planet. Scientists think they have changed and adapted over time to be able to live in the lake which is over 25 million years old.

The lake is fed by more than 300 rivers but has only one outlet - the Angara River. This unique structure helps maintain an easily damaged balance in the lake’s ecosystem. However, pollution from nearby industrial activity and climate change are threatening the lake’s water quality and its wildlife.

The government is making efforts to protect Lake Baikal, including stricter environmental regulations and international research collaborations. Still, preserving this natural wonder remains a difficult task. If these threats continue, many rare species could face extinction in the coming decades.
