The bar chart illustrates the population changes in three different cities (Metropolis, Urbania, and Port City) over a 40-year period, with data provided for the years 1980, 2000, and 2020.

Overall, both Metropolis and Urbania experienced population growth, but the patterns of their expansion were vastly different. In contrast, Port City's population did not follow a consistent trend. Metropolis remained the most populous city throughout the entire period.

Looking at the details, Metropolis saw a  and steady increase in its number of inhabitants. In 1980, its population stood at 5 million people. This figure grew consistently to 7.5 million by 2000 and reached 10 million by 2020, doubling its population over the 40 years.

Urbania, however, experienced a much more dramatic change. It started as the smallest city with only 1 million residents in 1980. After a moderate increase to 2 million by 2000, its population rose  to 7 million by 2020. This represents a  increase of 5 million people in just the last two decades of the period.

In stark contrast, the population of Port City showed a clear . It began with 4 million people in 1980 but then decreased to 3.5 million by the year 2000. Following this drop, the city's population made a recovery, rising to 3.7 million by 2020, a level still below its starting point.
