Swimming the Atlantic

Who was the first person to swim across the Atlantic Ocean? It was a 31-year-old Frenchman, Benoit Lecomte, a swimmer. After swimming nearly 6,000 kilometers across the Atlantic Ocean, his first words were, ‘Never again!’

Lecomte had trained for six years beforehand and he wanted to raise money for research. He began his record-setting attempt from Massachusetts on July 16, 1998, and had been swimming for 73 days when he finally arrived at Quiberon, in northwest France. Lecomte stopped at the Azores in the middle of the Atlantic after suffering exhaustion. He stayed there for a week to and then completed his amazing swim.

The human body could not survive 24 hours a day for 73 days in the North Atlantic Ocean. That's why Benoit swam for six to eight hours a day. He swam beside his support boat and had to eat 9,000 calories a day to replace those he used up while swimming. He faced sharks, six-meter-high waves, strong winds, and storms. In addition, he had to sea turtles, dolphins, jellyfish and extremely cold water on his way to a place in the record books. Wasn’t that an incredible achievement?

Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the questions.

Culture is like a unique recipe that shapes who we are. It includes traditions passed down through generations, sayings that hold special meaning, beliefs we hold dear, the language we speak, and the values we live by. This cultural recipe even influences how families are built and organized. It shapes the expectations we have for ourselves and others, and what we consider ideal in life. For example, culture plays a big role in how we view marriage, and the roles we see ourselves playing as husbands, wives, children, and parents.

Understanding cultural differences and similarities, especially when it comes to marriage, is very important. Culture can affect many things related to marriage, such as the way spouses share responsibilities within the marriage, the typical age at which people get married, and how many children couples might have. It also influences how people view divorce, cohabitation (living together without being married), and having children outside of marriage. Additionally, culture shapes the way parents raise their children. By understanding how relationships and marriage customs vary across different cultures, while also recognizing the similarities that exist, we can appreciate the unique ways marriages and family life affect people from various backgrounds. This knowledge can help us better support families and promote strong, happy marriages.

Cross-cultural marriages, or relationships in general where partners come from different backgrounds, can be exciting. Imagine all the new things you'd learn! You'd get to explore your partner's cultural heritage, visit their home country, learn their language, and discover new customs and ways of doing things. It's a truly enriching experience. However, it's important to be aware of potential challenges as well. No matter how much you love your partner or how open-minded you both are, misunderstandings can happen. It's part of the journey, and with patience and respect, these challenges can be overcome.
