Advertising

When a company wants to increase the sales of a product, it will usually advertise. An advertisement tells us what products are available and it also us to buy a particular product.

Today's television advertisements millions of people, but the first forms of advertising were much more local. Market traders shouted out what they had for sale and large signs displayed outside shops. Modern advertising began about 150 years ago, factories started producing goods large quantities. Before long, advertisements for a wide range of products appeared in national newspapers.

Nowadays, we see many different kinds of advertisements. They can appear on the sides of vehicles and on the clothes we wear as well as on television and radio. But the aim of all advertisements is the same. They try to our attention and get us to buy a particular product.

Read the passage and choose the best answer for each question.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is already making decisions in business, health care, and manufacturing. But AI algorithms still need people to check and make the final call. What would happen if AI systems had to make independent decisions, including life-or-death situations for humans?

Pop culture often shows our distrust of AI. In the 2004 sci-fi movie I, Robot, Detective Del Spooner is suspicious of robots after one saves him from a car crash but leaves a 12-year-old girl to drown. Unlike humans, robots don't have a moral conscience and follow their program. Human morality, however, is very different for everyone. To fully benefit from machines, we need to ensure they behave ethically. The "right" thing to do depends on who you ask. So, how do the ethics of AI developers influence AI's decisions?

Imagine a future with fully autonomous self-driving cars. We can prepare for meetings, read news, or relax while commuting. But what if something goes wrong? If the brakes fail, the computer must make a quick decision: swerve into a pole and kill the passenger or keep going and kill the pedestrian ahead. The car’s computer will have limited information from sensors and must decide quickly. This might seem dramatic, but such situations could be real soon.

Autonomous cars will generally make driving safer, but accidents will still happen. Tesla does not yet make fully autonomous cars, though it plans to. In accidents, Tesla cars don't automatically activate or deactivate the Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) system if a human driver is in control. Instead, if the car detects a possible collision, it alerts the driver. In full "autopilot" mode, the car should brake for pedestrians. Some argue that if the car can prevent a crash, it has a moral duty to override the driver in every situation.

AI systems' training processes are important. A system developed in one country can be influenced by its views, politics, ethics, and morals and can make it unsuitable elsewhere. AI is not "good" or "bad." To make the most of it, we need to agree on what we consider "ethical."
