It's the end of the school year and the exam period is approaching. Undoubtedly, exams  pressure on both students and parents alike.

Most parents would like to see their children  academically, as they believe a good education gives them an added advantage in life. They want to see their children settled in a rewarding job and be  well-off. But is that what their children have planned for themselves? Apparently it is not. Most students either can't think that far ahead or have no  of doing so. They would rather aim low so as not to be disappointed if they get low marks. However, child psychologists, who have been  on the matter, stress that students should aim high, but at the same time have a(an)  of other options. As a result, students will not have to worry about grades and in the long term they will have better chances of succeeding. On the whole, there are many practical and invaluable things that parents can do for their children.  being people their children can turn to, parents can plan a reasonable schedule that both they and their children  on. According to psychologists' , this schedule should include no more than eight hours of studying, three proper meals a day and some exercise. Above all, prior to each exam, parents need to  their children that everything will be fine whatever the result.

Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the questions.

In the twenty-first century, the paradigm of work is undergoing a profound metamorphosis, precipitated by technological innovation and shifting socio-economic dynamics. Artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and automation are not merely altering operational processes - they are reconceptualizing the very definition of employment itself. Work is no longer confined to fixed locations or rigid hours, and this transformation has both promising and problematic implications.

One of the most salient developments is the proliferation of remote work, made viable through digital ecosystems and cloud infrastructure. This model offers greater flexibility, autonomy, and geographic freedom for employees. Nevertheless, it also presents obstacles to cultivating organizational identity, maintaining collaboration, and fostering interpersonal synergy among colleagues. Without shared physical environments, companies often struggle to build cohesive teams or sustain a consistent workplace culture.

Concurrently, the ascendance of the gig economy marked by project-based, independent contractual labor has expanded occupational fluidity and empowered workers to choose assignments aligned with their preferences. However, this shift has also engendered precariousness. Many contingent workers lack access to employment protections, healthcare, paid leave, and retirement planning. Their income can be unstable, and job security is often minimal.

In addition, automation has displaced numerous repetitive and algorithmic tasks, prompting a fundamental recalibration of professional competencies. As technical skills become increasingly specialized and roles evolve rapidly, the onus is on individuals to pursue lifelong learning and remain adaptable in an ever-changing market. At the same time, employers are placing greater emphasis on interpersonal fluency, critical reasoning, and cognitive agility-attributes that are uniquely human and cannot be easily automated. In light of these profound shifts, a coordinated response among governments, academic institutions, and industries is essential. Policy innovation, curricular reform, and inclusive labor strategies must converge to support workforce resilience, equity, and sustainability. The future of work will belong not to the most efficient, but to the most adaptable-those who can navigate complexity with skill, empathy, and foresight.

What is the primary focus of the passage?
  • How companies are downsizing due to automation.
  • The changing nature of work in response to technology and social change.
  • The need to abandon traditional employment models.
  • The advantages of working from home for employees.

The word "metamorphosis" in paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to _____.

  • resistance
  • transformation
  • routine
  • reproduction
According to the passage, what challenge does remote work present?
  • It reduces access to high-speed internet.
  • It limits flexible working hours.
  • It hinders team building and company culture.
  • It encourages workplace inequality.
What is a notable feature of the gig economy?
  • It is based on short-term, independent projects.
  • It eliminates the need for digital skills.
  • It promotes full-time permanent contracts.
  • It decreases job availability.

The phrase "this shift" in paragraph 3 refers to _____.

  • the move from in-person work to online education
  • the decline of remote work options
  • the rise of the gig economy and automation
  • the increase in government job creation
What issue do many gig workers face?
  • Excessive income taxes
  • Lack of workplace safety regulations
  • Difficulty finding remote work
  • Limited access to employment benefits
What does the author suggest about technical skills?
  • They are being replaced by creative thinking.
  • They are decreasing in relevance.
  • They must be continuously updated and refined.
  • They only apply to IT professionals.
What kinds of human-centered skills are employers now valuing more?
  • Manual dexterity and endurance
  • Memorization and repetition
  • Compliance and routine task completion
  • Critical thinking and communication
What is implied about lifelong learning?
  • It is no longer necessary in the digital age.
  • It is essential for professional survival.
  • It is provided by most employers.
  • It is not applicable to gig workers.
What is the author's overall tone regarding the changes in the workforce?
  • Analytical and forward-thinking
  • Critical but dismissive
  • Alarmist and pessimistic
  • Sarcastic and skeptical

Fill in each blank with ONE best word.

Human-driven causes of climate change

Scientists agree that human activity is the primary driver of what we’re seeing now worldwide. This type of climate change is sometimes referred to as anthropogenic, is just a way of saying “caused by human beings.” The unchecked of fossil fuels over the past 150 years has drastically increased the presence of atmospheric greenhouse gases, most notably carbon dioxide. At the same time, logging and development have led to the widespread of forests, wetlands, and other carbon sinks - natural resources that store carbon dioxide and it from being released into the atmosphere.

Right now, atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide are the highest they’ve been in the last 800,000 years. Some greenhouse gases, like hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HFCs), do not even in nature. By continuously pumping these gases into the air, we helped raise the earth’s average temperature about 1.9 degrees Fahrenheit during the 20th century - which has brought us to our current era of deadly, and increasingly routine, weather extremes. And it’s important to note that while climate change everyone in some way, it doesn’t do so equally: All over the world, people of color and those living in economically disadvantaged or politically marginalized communities bear a larger burden, despite the fact that these communities a much smaller role in warming the planet.

Our ways of generating power for electricity, heat, and transportation, our built environment and industries, our ways of interacting with the land, and our consumption habits together serve as the primary drivers of climate change. While the percentages of greenhouse gases stemming from each source may fluctuate, the sources themselves remain relatively consistent.

You are going to read an article about a sailing race. Choose the most suitable heading from the list A to H for each paragraph from 1 to 5 of the article. There are two extra headings which you do not need to use. There has been an example for you.

Example: Paragraph 0: D

A. The consequences of poor performance

B. An unexpectedly demanding way of life

C. A solution that seems to work

D. The terrible consequences of making a mistake

E. Benefiting from the power of nature

F. Cooperating to overcome the power of nature

G. It's not what people think

H. No way out if you don't like it

Paragraph 0: D

Imagine for a moment, spending the night on board of a large yacht, being roughly woken in the pitch dark and ordered on deck. Every so often you will be totally drenched, very suddenly, in salt water. You will be sharing the same cramped space with 14 other people for a whole year. Your stomach, when not affected by seasickness, will be hit by the competitive tension and nervousness that afflicts all sportspeople. You will be obliged to concentrate without cease. The slightest loss of focus could cost someone their life.

Paragraph 1:

For the eight crews taking part in the Round-the-world yachting race, this has been daily life since they left Britain eleven months ago. Now, after racing 50,000 across kilometers of ocean, they are soon due home. While most of us have worked, slept, taken a holiday, these crews have sailed and sailed, day after day, night after night, in weather conditions that would test any human. This is the reality of ocean yacht racing, which bears little resemblance to the popular image of sailing - the quick sprint around a lake before returning ashore for a meal and a warm bath.

Paragraph 2:

Racing 20-metre yachts around the world is a story of unrelenting hard work, pushing yourself to the limits of endurance. But it is also a story of the vastness and beauty of the sea, of seeing the sun rise and set on hundreds of desolate horizons, and of the supreme satisfaction of arriving somewhere knowing that wind alone has taken you there.

Paragraph 3:

Unlike the captains, who are professional sailors, the crews all consist of amateur volunteers who have actually paid for the privilege of taking a year off from their work and enduring these difficult conditions. On board London Light the ages range from 21 to 65. For the youngest member, Susan Porter, the trip is about the excitement of both the racing and the elements “Being able to pitch yourselves as a team against gives you a huge sense of achievement,” she says.

Paragraph 4:

Jerry Wallace, a marketing director, found sailing a refreshing change from the selfish individualism of business. Although he was prepared for the discomfort, the mental stress of long distance racing was not what he has anticipated. A grand Prix driver has a few hours of focus, a footballer 90 minutes, but we have been racing for 11 months. This is something I didn’t really appreciate before I start.

Paragraph 5:

Inevitably, there are tensions. The kind of people who choose to take part in races like this tend to be motivated and strong-willed. On a trivial level, there are the usual arguments about things like cleaning, tidying, personal hygiene, even the way people snore. Row on a boat must be addressed immediately. Left to develop, they get much worse. On London Light they have done this by having a meeting where problems can be discussed and resolved by majority vote. Cooperation is the key, and everyone can have their say. The London is one of the few boats that has never lost any crew early because of a personality clash.
