HARRY’S BLOG

Hi, I’m Harry and this is the first sentence of my first ever blog! My English teacher suggested it, and I think it’s a great idea. So writing a blog might be a good way to achieve that. Right now I live with my parents and sister in a house in the centre of a town in the UK. I go to a secondary school called Westbridge College.

Westbridge College is a friendly place and there aren’t too many difficult rules. I like Maths best, and I’m really keen on sport as well. I play football for the school team, which is great except for weekend matches. They’re for resting! My best friend does basketball and I’m thinking of taking that up too, if I can find the time.

I’m into other things as well as sport. I’m learning salsa dancing, for example, which is great fun and very good exercise. I do that on Tuesday evenings. I like IT, too, and I do a lot of stuff on the Internet. And they actually pay me for it! I learnt the skills I needed at school, and it’s a great way to make a bit of money.

I can’t imagine living far away from the town centre. On Saturdays and Sundays my friends and I quite often meet up in town and then just go round looking in shop windows. It’s fun! Of course we can’t always afford to do much, so we often just go to a café and chat.

I’m 16 so I have to choose which subjects to study next year. It’s a hard decision to make. I definitely want to go to university. My ambition is to be a writer, especially a film reviewer, but I’m not sure how to get started on my career.

Fill in each blank with ONE best word.

AUSTIN HAY

Have you ever wished you had your own place? That's exactly how American teenager Austin Hay felt - before he built his own house, at the age of sixteen. Using materials mostly came from recycling centres, he constructed his own home. It's got everything he needs, including a kitchen, a bathroom (with shower), a bedroom and a toilet. The house, which is only about 40 metres, is one of the world's smallest houses. It's unusual for another reason too - it's built on wheels, so Austin can take it with him wherever he goes. He did most of the work himself although he had some help his father and family friends. The whole thing took less than two years.

As soon as the house was finished, Austin held the smallest party ever. Then he moved in, and he's lived there ever . He likes the independence, and he likes 'living small', he says, because it's cheap and green. At the moment, the house is parked in his parents' garden. , when he leaves school and goes to university, he won't leave it behind. He's going to take it with him, and live in it while he studies. Then when he gets a job, he plans to take his little house with him once more.

Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the questions.

MAN AND MACHINE

by Mark Ravens

Science and technology have developed a lot since the fifteenth century, when the artist Leonardo da Vinci drew mechanical figures that looked like men – the first known robot designs. Now, of course, robots are everywhere, from factories to space stations, and they safely carry out all sorts of tasks, from cutting the grass to performing surgery. However, until recently most of them haven’t looked like humans at all, as Leonardo imagined, and they certainly haven’t had feelings. But now all that is beginning to change.

Imagine a world in which robots not only look like us but also know our moods, and have feelings themselves. It might even be possible for robots to become our friends! Science fiction writers have written about a world just like that for many years, and scientists are now predicting that intelligent robots like these will exist quite soon. In fact, they’ve already produced one that recognizes sound, movement and touch. Its bright red heart, which you can see through its plastic body, beats faster if you are rough with the robot or shout at it. But its heart slows down if you are gentle with it. Although it can’t talk, it’s easy to believe the robot actually has feelings!

It’s true that so far ‘human’ robots do not really move, talk or respond in the way we humans do, but they are becoming more advanced all the time. At some point in the future, a robot will definitely be created that may not look like us, but will be capable of doing anything that we can. And then we will truly be in the world of science fiction stories!

What is the main idea of the passage?
  • Robots now move and act like humans all the time.
  • Robots are starting to become more human-like.
  • Robots have been used in science for many years.
  • Robots are only useful in dangerous environments.
What does the word “they” in paragraph 1 refer to?
  • people
  • machines
  • robots
  • factories
Which piece of information is NOT mentioned in the passage?
  • A robot has a heart that reacts to human touch.
  • Robots may one day have human-like emotions.
  • Some robots can speak many different languages.
  • Robots are used in medical procedures like surgery.
What is the synonym of “predicting” in paragraph 2?
  • expecting
  • explaining
  • creating
  • watching

Which of the following sentences best paraphrases the underlined sentence in paragraph 3?

“It’s true that so far ‘human’ robots do not really move, talk or respond in the way we humans do, but they are becoming more advanced all the time.”

  • Human robots have fully learned to behave and communicate like humans.
  • Most human robots act like people and respond exactly as we expect.
  • Although human robots are perfect, more features are being added now.
  • Even though human robots are still limited, they are constantly improving.

TV ADS

By Sarah Stevens

I was watching TV the other night and - as usual - there were all those  advertisements in the middle of the film, disturbing my concentration! Well, I don’t usually  any notice of the ads, in fact I quite often turn the volume down when they’re on, as they’re so boring. But this time I’m not quite sure what happened to me. One ad  my attention. It was for a smartphone, and I was actually thinking of getting one at the time. So anyway, I decided to go for it, and I ordered one. The advertisement made it sound so brilliant!

Well, it arrived the next day. It was super fast, and at first I was impressed. , I really regret it now. I’m not at all happy with it, and I’m sure it’s faulty. For example, I texted a friend yesterday and the message went to the wrong person! That’s hopeless - and it could be quite embarrassing too. Another thing is, the battery doesn’t last for very long. I it last night but it’s almost dead again already. It’s very disappointing, and I hope they give me my money back.
