Swimming the Atlantic

Who was the first person across the Atlantic Ocean? It was a 31-year-old Frenchman, Benoit Lecomte, a swimmer. After swimming nearly 6,000 kilometers across the Atlantic Ocean, his first words were, ‘Never again!’

Lecomte had trained for six years beforehand and he wanted to raise money for cancer research. He began his record-setting attempt from Massachusetts on July 16, 1998, and had been swimming for 73 days when he finally arrived at Quiberon, in northwest France. Lecomte stopped at the Azores in the middle of the Atlantic after from exhaustion. He stayed there for a week to and then completed his amazing swim.

The human body could not survive 24 hours a day for 73 days in the North Atlantic Ocean. That's why Benoit swam for six to eight hours a day. He swam beside his support boat and had to eat 9,000 calories a day to replace those he used up while swimming. He faced sharks, six-meter-high waves, strong winds, and storms. addition, he had to deal with sea turtles, dolphins, jellyfish and extremely cold water on his way to a place in the record books. Wasn’t that an incredible achievement?

Staying in on a Saturday night

Most teenagers look forward to Saturday night as it is normally the time to go and have fun with friends. But occasionally, as I am exhausted from all the studying for school, I just need to relax and at home.

Tonight, two of my friends are coming round to my house and we are going to watch a film on Netflix together. We are going to watch an action film, which is great my audio system has four speakers around the living room. The sound effects will be great!

We have decided order some pizzas because my mum has to work late and none of us wanted to cook tonight. There is also a lot of ice cream in the freezer for dessert. I guess we won't be eating healthy food tonight.

My sister has already to the cinema with her friends, so she won't be bothering us unless she comes home early!

Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the questions.

Sometimes people add to what they say even when they don't talk. Gestures are the “silent language” of every culture. We point a finger or move another part of the body to show what we want to say. It is important to know the body language of every country or we may be misunderstood. In the United States, people greet each other with a handshake in a formal introduction. The handshake must be firm. If the handshake is weak, it is a sign of weakness or unfriendliness. Friends may place a hand on the other's arm or shoulder. Some people, usually women, greet a friend with a hug.

Space is important to Americans. When two people talk to each other, they usually stand about two and a half feet away and at an angle, so they are not facing each other directly. Americans get uncomfortable when a person stands too close. They will move back to have their space. If Americans touch another person by accident, they say, “Pardon me.” or "Excuse me." Americans like to look the other person in the eyes when they are talking. If you don’t do so, it means you are bored, hiding something, or are not interested. But when you are staring at someone, it is not polite. For Americans, thumbs-up means yes, very good, or well done. Thumbs down mean the opposite. To call a waiter, raise one hand to head level or above. To show you want the check, make a movement with your hands as if you are signing a piece of paper. It is all right to point at things but not at people with the hand and index finger. Americans shake their index finger at children when they scold them and pat them on the head when they admire them. Learning a culture's body language is sometimes confusing. If you don't know what to do, the safest thing to do is to smile.

From the passage, we can learn that _____.

  • gestures don't mean anything while talking
  • it's confusing to understand a culture's body language
  • gestures can help us to express ourselves
