Early Writing and Alphabets
When people noticed began to write, they did not use an alphabet. Instead, they drew small pictures to show the objects they were writing about. This was very slow because there was a different picture for every word. The Ancient Egyptians had a of picture writing that was called hieroglyphics. The meaning of this writing was forgotten for a very long time but in 1799 some scientists a stone near Alexandria, in Egypt. The stone had been there for over a thousand years. It had both Greek and hieroglyphics on it and researchers were finally able to understand what the hieroglyphics meant. An alphabet is quite different picture writing. It of letters or symbols that represent a sound and each sound is just part of one word. The Phoenicians, who lived about 3,000 years ago, developed the modern alphabet. It was later improved by the Romans and this alphabet is now used throughout the world.

Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the questions.
Many British people don't think about clothes very much. They just like to be comfortable. When they go out to enjoy themselves, they can wear almost anything. At theaters, cinemas and concerts you can put on what you like from elegant suits and dresses to jeans and sweaters. Anything goes, as long as you look clean and tidy.
But in Britain, as well as the United States, men in offices usually wear suits and ties, and women wear dresses or skirts (not trousers). Doctors, lawyers and business people wear quite formal clothes. And in some hotels and restaurants men have to wear ties and women wear smart dresses.
In many years, Americans are more relaxed than British people, but they are more careful with their clothes. At home or on holiday, most Americans wear informal or sporty clothes. But when they go out in the evening, they like to look elegant. In good hotels and restaurants, men have to wear jackets and ties, and women wear pretty clothes and smart hairstyles.
It is difficult to say exactly what people wear informal or formal in Britain and the United States because everyone is different. If you are not sure what to wear, watch what other people do and do the same. You will feel more relaxed if you don't look too different from everyone else.
Many British people wear freely when they _____.
