Mountain climbing

One of the most difficult but rewarding of pastimes is mountain climbing. The modern climber must many different skills. Rock climbing requires a combination of gymnastic ability, imagination and observation, but perhaps the most necessary skill is being able to out how much weight a particular rock will support. Mountaineers climb in groups of three or four, each climber at a distance of approximately six metres from the next. Usually, one person climbs while the other climbers keep hold of the rope. The most experienced climber goes first and shows the other climbers which way to go, making the rope secure so that it is safe for the others

With much mountain climbing, snow skills a very important part. Ice axes are used for breaking steps into the snow and for testing the ground. Climbers always tie themselves together so that, if the leader falls, he or she can be held by the others and pulled back to safety. The number of dangers faced by climbers is almost endless. And the of oxygen at high altitudes makes life even more difficult for mountaineers.

Do you play a jazz instrument - maybe the trumpet, guitar, or drums? Do you want to have some musical fun with other students in the school have similar interests to yours? If you do, come and us on Tuesdays after school in the music room. At the moment, there are eight of us playing quite a wide range of instruments. We're having such a great time and Mr. Jones is an amazing jazz teacher, but we need more people, especially electric guitarists!

We're hoping to perform in the end-of-term show and Mr. Jones said he'll deal all the technical arrangements and the sound system, which is great!
