Read the passage and then decide whether the statements that follow are true or false.

Late in the afternoon, the boys put up their tent in the middle of a field. As soon as this was done, they cooked the meal over an open fire. They were all hungry and the food smelt good. After a wonderful meal, they told fairy tales and sang songs by the camp fire. But some time later it began to rain. The boys felt tired so they put out the fire and crept into their tent. Their sleeping-bags were warm and comfortable, so they all slept soundly. In the middle of the night, two boys woke up and began shouting. The tent was full of the water! They all leapt out of their sleeping-bags and hurried outside. It was raining heavily and they found that a stream had formed in the field. The stream wound its way across the field and then flowed right under their tent!

The boys set up a tent on the riverbank.

The boys told ghost stories and sang songs after having a wonderful meal.

Because the sleeping bags were so warm and comfortable, the boys slept very well.

Two boys woke up first and discovered the tent was flooded.

The stream created by the heavy rain flowed directly into the boys' tent.

Read and answer the following questions.

Sometimes, your parents give you warnings. They might say, "Be careful!" They can use words to help keep you safe. Animals cannot use words, but they can warn of danger in different ways.

A beaver has a flat and thick tail. It slaps it on the water. THWACK! It cracks like a firecracker! The other beavers go and hide. They know that there is danger nearby! Ants are much tinier than beavers, yet they still face danger! If the ants find yucky or poisonous food, they leave a special odor on the path. Only other ants can smell it. The special odor tells other ants not to get food there. Honey bees are like ants. They live in a giant family. Some bees make honey. Other bees go look for food. While looking for food, a bee might see a wasp. Wasps attack and kill bees. This bee must go back and warn the others. Inside the hive, the bee will vibrate. This is a special danger dance. It tells the bees that there is danger. Now they will go look for food in a different flower field!

These are just a few examples of animals communicating to keep each other safe. Sounds, scents, and movement all help animals talk to one another without using words.

What is special about a beaver's tail?

  • Its hard tail can knock over trees.
  • Its thick, flat tail can make a loud sound on the water.
  • Its tail can beat off predators, or animals that attack it.
  • Its thick, hard tail can knock fish out of the water.

Based on the passage, which is the way ants use to warn about the danger?

  • Leaving a special odor
  • Doing a special dance
  • Making a very loud noise
  • Touching others' antennae

How do bees warn each other of danger?

  • They flap their wings against other bees' wings.
  • They tell the queen bee, and she warns the others.
  • They fly in and out of the hive over and over.
  • They vibrate to make a danger dance at the hive.

What does the word "giant" mean in the passage?

  • small
  • big
  • tiny
  • normal

What is the main idea of the passage?

  • Ways ants and bees use to communicate with each other
  • Different ways to give warning about danger of human
  • Ways to fight off dangerous predators of different animals
  • Different ways animals use to warn each other of danger
