Read and answer the following questions.

George de Mestral was a Swiss engineer who loved hiking in the mountains. One day in 1941, he went for a walk with his dog. When they returned home, de Mestral noticed that small burrs from plants were stuck to his clothes and his dog's fur. He did not get angry. Instead, he became very curious. He looked at the burrs under a microscope and made an interesting discovery. The burrs had tiny hooks that attached to the loops in fabric and animal fur.

De Mestral spent eight years trying to copy this natural design. He experimented with many different materials. Finally, he found that nylon worked best. He created two strips: one with tiny hooks and one with tiny loops. When pressed together, they stuck firmly. He named his invention "Velcro," combining the French words for velvet and hook.

At first, people did not take Velcro seriously. The fashion industry thought it looked ugly. However, NASA began using Velcro in space suits and astronauts' equipment. After that, everyone wanted it. Today, Velcro is used in shoes, bags, sports equipment, and many other products around the world.

George de Mestral's curiosity during a simple walk led to one of the most useful inventions of the 20th century.

The burrs stuck to de Mestral's clothes and his dog's fur because _____.

  • the weather was very humid that day
  • they had tiny hooks that attached to loops
  • the dog kept rolling on the ground
  • the fabric of his clothes was made of nylon
How did the fashion industry react when they first saw Velcro?
  • They were excited to use it in their designs.
  • They thought it looked ugly and did not like it.
  • They immediately ordered large amounts.
  • They helped de Mestral improve the product.

According to the passage, how has Velcro changed our lives?

  • It has encouraged more people to become inventors.
  • It is used in many everyday objects around the world.
  • It has made hiking in the mountains much more popular.
  • It helps the fashion industry become more successful.

What does the word "curious" mean in this passage?

  • feeling angry or upset about something
  • not interested in things around him
  • wanting to know or learn about something
  • feeling tired after a long walk

Which statement best describes the main idea of the passage?

  • George de Mestral became rich by selling Velcro.
  • NASA uses Velcro for space suits of astronauts.
  • Burrs have lots of tiny hooks on them.
  • George de Mestral invented Velcro by observing nature.
