The story of the hamburger

The hamburger is one of the most popular foods in the world, but where did it come from? Nobody really knows. One theory is that about 800 years ago Mongolian soldiers, who didn't have or cookers, put meat under their saddles while they rode their horses to make it soft. In the evening they ate the meat without cooking it.

Another story is that immigrants to America from the city of Hamburg in Germany brought their ‘Hamburg steak’ with them - a type of fried meat in . Or perhaps Otta Kuasw from Hamburg made the first hamburger. Otto meat with eggs, then fried it and put it between bread and sold it to young, hard-working and sailors for their lunch. When the sailors went back to America they asked their families to make the same thing and so the hamburger was born.

Read the following passage then choose the best answer to each question below.

One day my dad said, "Why don't we have a street party?" This means that the street is closed so cars can’t use it, and people put tables and chairs out in the street, then have a party! Dad said there was one in 1977 and he still remembers it well. Everyone loved it! I couldn't believe that since 1977 they never had another one. If it was so good, why not do it again?

We started to organize it, together with some other people. I helped to make the web page, so everyone on the street knew about the party and could post their old photos from the party in 1977. There were some pictures of my dad when he was a kid, together with his friends, who have moved away from the street now. lt was interesting to see that the buildings on the street haven't changed at all!

My mum was a bit worried about the party. "But a lot of people on the street don’t really know each other?" she said. "What if they don't have anything to talk about?" I just said, "Relax, Mum. It'll be great." So, what was the party like? It was fantastic! My friends and I really liked speaking to an old lady called Louisa. She's 89 and was telling us about when she and her friends were our age.

So now I always chat with her when I see her on the street. I didn't know who she was before, so I'm glad we had the party.

Why are there no cars when people hold a street party?

  • Because people prefer walking to driving.
  • Because the street has a lot of tables and chairs.
  • Because people want to clean the street.
  • Because the street party is fun.

Why was Will surprised?

  • His father wanted to have a street party.
  • There has not been a street party for a long time.
  • Many people remembered the last street party.
  • His father doesn't want to hold a street party.

What did the photos from the 1977 show?

  • The street still looks the same now.
  • There are more children in the street.
  • There are more old people in the street.
  • The same people still line on the street now.

Why was Will's mother worried?

  • She thought that the party was too expensive.
  • She thought that people might not come to the party.
  • She thought that the guests might not talk to each other.
  • She thought that the party was not fun.

Will and his friends enjoyed _____.

  • hearing Louisa's stories
  • meeting Louisa's friends
  • telling Louisa about their lives
  • hearing Louisa's secrets
