Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the questions.

English is spoken by more and more people around the world, but this does not mean that every country only uses English. In many places, older languages are still spoken by local people, even though fewer people use them each year. Because these languages are not international, most people know very little about them. But for the families who speak these languages, they are much more than just words — they are part of their history and their daily life.

In New Zealand, the native people are called Māori, and their language is te reo Māori. In the past, children were not allowed to speak Māori at school, so many young people stopped using it. By the 1970s, very few children could speak the language well. Because of this, Māori teachers and parents opened special schools where young children learned everything only in Māori. In 1987, the government made Māori an official language of the country. Today, Māori is taught in many schools, and there is even a TV channel that shows programmes only in Māori.

A similar story happened in Hawaii. For many years, children were punished for speaking Hawaiian at school. By 1980, fewer than 50 children could still speak it well. A group of parents and teachers decided to act. They opened small schools called Pūnana Leo, where young children learned Hawaiian from their very first day. Slowly, more families began to use Hawaiian at home again. Today, Hawaiian is an official language of the state, together with English, and thousands of children now learn it at school.

Sadly, not every language has a happy ending. In the United States, many Native American languages have almost disappeared, with only a few older speakers left. In Japan, the Ainu language has the same problem, and very few young people can speak it. Around the world, experts believe that a language disappears every few weeks, often before anyone can save it.

Why do people work so hard to save a language? Experts say that a language is strongly connected to a person's identity - the way people see themselves and their community. When people lose their language, they can feel that they are losing a part of who they are. This is why families, schools and governments need to work together, not just to teach a language, but to make young people feel proud to speak it. If these languages are going to survive, every generation must choose to pass them on to the next one.

In the first paragraph, the writer believes that older local languages ____.

  • are growing in popularity around the world
  • are deeply important to the local families
  • are known by most people internationally
  • are only useful for learning about history

Why did young people in New Zealand stop speaking Māori in the past?

  • They preferred to watch television programmes in English.
  • They wanted to learn English from their parents.
  • They were not permitted to use it in class.
  • They moved to towns where nobody understood it.

According to the passage, the Pūnana Leo schools ____.

  • focused on teaching the Hawaiian language to children
  • punished students who made mistakes in their lessons
  • were started by the government to support families
  • had fewer than fifty students in the beginning

What point does the writer make in the fourth paragraph?

  • All Native American languages have completely died out.
  • Japan has successfully saved the native Ainu language.
  • Experts need several weeks to record a language.
  • Many older languages are disappearing very quickly today.

What is the main idea of the final paragraph?

  • Only the government can stop a language from disappearing.
  • Schools should focus on teaching history rather than languages.
  • Young people are often confused about their personal identities.
  • Saving a language needs community teamwork and personal pride.
