Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the questions.

Humans have explored only a small part of the Earth's oceans, even though water covers most of our planet. There is still a lot that people do not know about life under the sea. A popular documentary series recently showed viewers many surprising facts about ocean animals and how they live.

One example is the clownfish. All clownfish are born male, but the biggest and strongest fish in a group can change into a female. This happens so that the group always has a female to lay eggs. If the female dies, another male quickly changes into a female to take her place.

There is also the octopus, which uses objects as tools. Some octopuses collect empty coconut shells from the sea floor and carry them from place to place. When the octopus feels unsafe, it hides inside the shells to protect its soft body. It can even carry two shells together and hold them around its body like a suit of armour.

Baby green turtles must survive completely alone from the moment they hatch on the beach. As soon as they break out of their eggs, they rush across the sand towards the sea. This journey is very dangerous, and many turtles are caught and eaten by birds along the way. Even after reaching the water, they must swim for many kilometres before they are safe from other animals.

Another surprising creature is the archerfish. This fish can shoot a stream of water from its mouth to knock insects off leaves above the water. Once the insect falls, the archerfish quickly swims over and eats it. Scientists say this skill takes the fish a long time to learn well.

These are just a few of the incredible animals shown in the documentary. It took the filmmakers several years to complete the series, travelling to oceans all around the world. The photography amazed many viewers and helped people understand just how little we still know about life in the sea.

What does the passage mainly discuss?

  • Humans have finally explored all of the world's oceans.
  • A new TV programme reveals unusual facts about sea creatures.
  • Filmmakers usually take many years to produce a nature series.
  • Baby sea animals face many terrible dangers on sandy beaches.

Why does a male clownfish change into a female?

  • to become the biggest and strongest fish in the sea
  • to protect the baby fish from other dangerous sea animals
  • to make sure the group can continue producing new eggs
  • to take the place of a larger male in the group

According to the passage, the octopus uses coconut shells ____.

  • to store food for later
  • to catch prey more easily
  • to protect its eggs from enemies
  • to protect itself from danger

What does the writer say about baby green turtles?

  • They receive no help from their parents after they hatch.
  • They stay on the beach until they are big enough.
  • They travel together in large groups to be completely safe.
  • They must learn how to swim well from older turtles.

What can be inferred about young archerfish based on the passage?

  • They rely on older archerfish to teach them how to hunt.
  • They can produce a stronger water jet than adult archerfish.
  • They probably need many attempts before they hunt successfully.
  • They mainly eat plants until they master their hunting skill.
