Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the questions.

You Are Already Enough

Almost everyone wants to feel special, but many people grow up believing they are not special at all. They wish they were more attractive, better at sports, or had nicer things. In an old story, a scarecrow without a brain wanted to be clever, a man without a heart wanted to feel love, and a lion without courage wanted to be brave. By the end of the story, each of them discovers that he already has what he was searching for.

Parents usually want their children to become the best they can be. Sometimes, without meaning to, they compare their children to others to encourage them. Although parents mean well, children often hear a different message: that they are not good enough yet. There will always be someone who is better at something. Some people are not as clever as we are but are much better at sports. Others may not be as good-looking, but they have more money or more friends. It is simply not possible for one person to be the best at everything all the time.

A real-life example of this idea is the basketball player Michael Jordan. When he was a teenager, he tried out for his school's basketball team but was not chosen. He felt disappointed and believed he was not good enough. However, instead of giving up, he practised harder every single day. Slowly, his skills improved, and years later he became known as one of the greatest basketball players in history. His story shows that feeling "not good enough" at first does not mean staying that way forever.

Like the characters in the old story, we often already have the very things we are searching for. We just do not always notice them. Parents sometimes forget to remind their children that they are already special. Perhaps no one told our parents this when they were young, or perhaps they simply forgot. Either way, it is sometimes up to us to remember, and even to remind others, that each person is special in their own way. What we are is already enough.

According to the first paragraph, the characters in the old story find out that _____.

  • they already have the things they truly want
  • they will never get the things they need
  • they must become cleverer to feel real love
  • they need to look for better things elsewhere

Why do parents sometimes compare their children to others?

  • To make them feel they are not good enough
  • To help them try harder and become their best
  • To show them who the cleverest children actually are
  • To prove that someone is always better at sports

What did Michael Jordan do when he was not chosen for the basketball team?

  • He decided to stop playing basketball for a while.
  • He tried to find a different team to join quickly.
  • He trained much harder to improve his playing skills.
  • He asked his parents to help him.

In the final paragraph, the writer suggests that parents _____.

  • never want to tell their children they are special
  • might not have been told they were special themselves
  • should compare their children to other families more often
  • always remember to remind their children to be brave

What is the main message of the passage?

  • Sports can teach us how to accept our failures.
  • Parents should stop comparing children to famous people.
  • Only clever and brave people can achieve their goals.
  • Everyone is already special and valuable as they are.
