Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the questions.

In 2020, a small robot began an exciting journey to the planet Mars. Scientists at NASA built a special vehicle called Perseverance. Its job was to search for signs of ancient life on Mars. People also called this mission Mars 2020. The mission needed years of careful planning before the launch finally happened. On July 30, 2020, a powerful rocket carried Perseverance into space from Cape Canaveral in Florida. The journey across space was very long. The spacecraft had to travel about 470 million kilometres to reach Mars, and the trip took almost seven months. During this long journey, engineers on Earth checked the spacecraft carefully to make sure everything was working well.

When Perseverance got close to Mars, it was moving very fast — nearly 20,000 kilometres per hour. To land safely, the spacecraft had to slow down very quickly, in just a few minutes. First, a giant parachute opened to slow it down. Then, rockets fired to make the landing soft. When it touched the ground, its speed was only about 3 kilometres per hour. On February 18, 2021, Perseverance landed safely inside a place called Jezero Crater. Scientists believe this crater was once a lake full of water, millions of years ago.

Perseverance did not travel to Mars alone. A tiny helicopter named Ingenuity travelled with it, attached to the bottom of the rover. Ingenuity later became the first aircraft to fly on another planet. It made dozens of flights above the surface of Mars.

Since landing, Perseverance has explored the surface of Mars, taken photographs, studied rocks, and collected samples that scientists hope to bring back to Earth one day. Its mission continues to help scientists understand more about Mars and whether life could have existed there long ago.

Why did NASA send the Perseverance rover to Mars?

  • To look for evidence of life in the past
  • To build a new lake full of water
  • To test a powerful rocket from Florida
  • To find out how engineers work in space

According to the passage, the journey from Earth to Mars _____.

  • finished very quickly in a few minutes
  • covered exactly twenty thousand kilometres
  • lasted for nearly seven whole months
  • required many years of careful flying

Why did scientists choose to land the rover in Jezero Crater?

  • They believe it is a flat area.
  • They wanted to fly an aircraft there.
  • They used it to slow down quickly.
  • They think it used to hold water.

In the third paragraph, the writer notes that the Ingenuity helicopter _____.

  • landed in a large lake to collect water
  • flew many times above the Martian ground
  • travelled to the planet completely on its own
  • stayed attached to the rover during the flights

What is the main idea of the passage?

  • A robot is exploring Mars to help scientists understand its history.
  • A special helicopter is the most important part of space travel.
  • Earth engineers have successfully found signs of life on another planet.
  • Modern spacecraft can safely travel to Mars in just a few days.
