Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the questions.

Fifth Avenue is one of the most famous streets in New York City and is known around the world for its shops and buildings. The street runs through the middle of Manhattan, from north to south, and it separates the city into east and west sides. Fifth Avenue got its name from a plan for the city's streets made in 1811. In this plan, the main streets running from north to south were given numbers, and the numbering started in the east and moved west.

Today, Fifth Avenue is best known as a shopping street. Some of the most expensive shops in the world are found along a part of the avenue near the middle of Manhattan. Visitors travel from many countries just to walk along this section and look at the famous shop windows, especially during the winter holidays, when the windows are beautifully decorated.

The avenue is also home to several important buildings. The Empire State Building, one of the tallest and most famous buildings in the city, stands right on Fifth Avenue. A little further north, visitors can find Rockefeller Center, a large group of buildings with shops, offices, and a well-known ice rink that opens every winter. At the very top of Fifth Avenue, the street reaches Central Park, a huge green space where people can walk, relax, and enjoy nature in the middle of the busy city.

In the past, Fifth Avenue was known by a different nickname among wealthy New Yorkers. During the late 1800s, many rich families built large houses along the street, so people began calling it "Millionaire's Row." Although most of those old houses have since disappeared, replaced by tall office buildings and modern shops, the street has kept its reputation as a symbol of wealth and style.

Every year, Fifth Avenue also hosts several famous parades, including a large parade in spring. Thousands of visitors line the street to watch, making it one of the busiest and most exciting streets in the entire city.

How did Fifth Avenue get its current name?

  • From an old plan for city streets

  • From a wealthy family in the city

  • From the tall buildings in that area

  • From the total number of its shops

According to the second paragraph, the shop windows are _____.

  • soon going to be replaced by office buildings
  • opened only during the winter
  • made to look special for winter holidays
  • filled with the most expensive winter clothes

What happens at Rockefeller Center during the winter?

  • A large parade takes place there.
  • A famous ice rink opens for the season.
  • Visitors walk and relax in a green park.
  • Old houses are replaced by office buildings.

In the past, people called the street "Millionaire's Row" because _____.

  • a lot of rich people lived there
  • the city's new offices opened there
  • some very expensive shops started there
  • many tall modern buildings stood there
