Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the questions.

Elephants are some of the most intelligent and social animals in the world. People like them for their gentle nature and their amazing abilities. These huge animals live in parts of Africa and Asia, and scientists and visitors have been interested in them for many years.

At wildlife parks, elephants are often the animals that people remember best. Lions and giraffes are usually the first animals that children want to see. However, it is often the elephants, especially the way they take care of their babies, that leave the strongest memory. The calm and gentle way they protect their young shows just how intelligent these animals are.

One of the most surprising things about elephants is their trunk. It has no bones at all, but it contains thousands of muscles. This gives the trunk enough strength to lift a heavy branch, but also enough control to pick up something as small as a single leaf. Elephants are also unusual because they can recognise themselves in a mirror. Very few other animals in the world can do this.

Elephants also live in close family groups. Unlike many animals that live alone, they stay together and are led by the oldest female in the group. She uses her memory to lead the others to water during the driest months of the year. Sometimes she remembers long journeys from many years before. This strong memory and sense of family help elephant groups survive when life in the wild becomes very difficult.

Sadly, elephants are now in danger. Their numbers have dropped a lot in recent years. This is mainly because people hunt them for their tusks, or because their forests and grasslands are being destroyed. If nothing changes soon, future generations might never get the chance to see these wonderful animals living freely in the wild.

What do visitors to wildlife parks usually remember most about elephants?

  • The fast way they run away from lions
  • The gentle way they treat their babies
  • The clever way they use their trunks
  • The loud way they talk to each other

The writer says that an elephant's trunk is very strong because _____.

  • it contains many hard and thick bones
  • it helps the animal push down a heavy branch
  • it is completely full of strong muscles
  • it can easily hold up a small mirror

How does the oldest female elephant help her family group?

  • By remembering where to find fresh water
  • By fighting off other dangerous wild animals
  • By travelling alone to find new homes
  • By showing the younger elephants how to hunt

In the final paragraph, the writer explains that elephant numbers are falling because _____.

  • people are moving them to smaller wildlife parks
  • people are taking away their food and water
  • people are afraid of these dangerous wild animals
  • people are destroying their natural habitats

What is the writer's main purpose in this text?

  • To explain how to look after elephants in parks
  • To compare elephants with other wild animals in Africa
  • To describe a wonderful animal and the dangers it faces
  • To tell an exciting story about an elephant family
