Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the questions.
Most adults are convinced that children today have lost the ability to play creatively. Spend five minutes with a screen, they argue, and a child simply stops inventing — the device does all the thinking for them. It's an idea you hear everywhere, from worried parents to frustrated teachers. But is this belief actually supported by evidence?
An American psychologist called Sandra Russ set out to answer that question. Having studied children's play for over thirty years, she had built up an enormous collection of data showing how children use toys to make up stories. Her idea was simple but clever: compare today's results with those she had collected decades earlier, to see whether imagination had really declined.
Before running the comparison, Russ asked a group of teachers what they expected to find. Interestingly, most predicted that children's creativity would turn out to be far weaker now, largely because of the amount of time young people spend staring at screens. It wasn't a surprising answer — after all, it's what most people believe.
The results, however, told a completely different story. Russ discovered that children's imagination had remained remarkably stable over the years. Although children now play in different ways — often borrowing characters from video games rather than inventing them from scratch — they can still build original stories and think creatively. Some researchers have even suggested that certain types of video games may actually strengthen a child's imagination rather than damage it.
Not every expert has been convinced by these findings, though. Critics point out that traditional play tests were never designed to measure the kind of creativity children use with screens, especially since many games already provide ready-made characters and settings. Others argue that children today have significantly less free time for unstructured play, and that this could still be affecting their imagination in ways Russ's study simply didn't capture. So the debate is far from settled. For now, though, the evidence suggests that children's imagination isn't disappearing — it's simply evolving.
In the first paragraph, the writer says that many adults believe _____.
