Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the questions.

In August 2026, Bartłomiej Kubkowski became the first person to swim across the Baltic Sea from Sweden to Poland. He had already broken a world record in 2025, swimming over 100 km in a pool in just 24 hours. He was born in Poland and started swimming when he was only four years old. As a teenager, he moved to another city so he could train at a better swimming school. He lived there for several years before later moving to two other cities near the coast. Eventually, he decided to try something much harder than pool swimming. "I wanted a real challenge," he says. "So I chose the Baltic Sea."

Kubkowski didn't want an easy route across the sea, and he knew the crossing would test him completely. "The hardest part I could imagine was doing it without ever touching the boat," he explains. Under the official rules, he could receive food and drink, but no physical support. After four failed attempts between 2022 and 2024, when bad weather and exhaustion forced him to stop, he finally succeeded in August 2026. He left the Swedish coast on a Friday and swam for about 55 hours without any sleep, covering more than 160 kilometres in total.

The best moment of the swim came when Kubkowski finally saw the Polish coastline near Dziwnów. "Although there were swimmers who had also tried this crossing and given up, I never lost hope," he says. "The closer I got to Poland, the more people seemed to be following my journey online." His worst moment came during the final night, when extreme tiredness made it hard to think clearly and stay focused in the cold, dark water. His support team could pass him food using a long pole, but he had to keep swimming alone the whole time, fighting both his body and his mind. Despite the pain, Kubkowski now says the challenge was worth it, especially since his swim also raised a huge amount of money for children with cancer.

Why did Bartłomiej change cities when he was younger?

  • To live close to the sea
  • To improve his swimming skills
  • To break a world record in a swimming pool
  • To prepare for a sea challenge

What caused Kubkowski to fail his earlier attempts to cross the sea?

  • A lack of food from his support team

  • Terrible weather conditions and extreme tiredness

  • A sudden injury in the dark and cold water

  • The difficult rules about not touching the support boat

During the swim, the official rules stated that Kubkowski _____.

  • could take meals from his support team
  • had to get some rest without leaving the water
  • could stop the clock during heavy storms at sea
  • needed to complete the difficult journey in fifty hours

According to the passage, we learn that Kubkowski feels _____.

  • proud that he became famous within hours
  • surprised that he reached the Polish coast
  • certain that he will never swim again
  • pleased because he helped sick children

What is the writer's main purpose in this passage?

  • To describe a man's amazing physical achievement
  • To compare swimming in pools with swimming in open oceans
  • To advise young athletes on how to train for races
  • To explain why the Baltic Sea is too dangerous for sports
