Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the questions.

When people think of a library, they usually imagine a quiet room with rows of bookshelves. Most people don't expect libraries to be exciting or beautiful. But some modern libraries around the world look so amazing that thousands of people visit them just to see the buildings.

The Stuttgart City Library in Germany is one good example. It was finished in 2011 and looks like a giant white cube from the outside. Inside, almost everything is white, and natural light comes in through a big window in the roof. The bookshelves are not straight like in most libraries — they curve gently around several open floors. Many visitors say that when they stand in the middle of the building, they feel like they are inside a piece of modern art, not a library.

Another incredible library is the Tianjin Binhai Library in China. This library has a wave-shaped design, and the shelves seem to flow from the floor all the way up to the ceiling. When the project was first announced, a lot of people thought it would be too difficult to build. But engineers completed it in only three years, and it quickly became one of the most photographed libraries in the world. One fun detail is that some of the "shelves" near the top are only there for decoration — nobody can actually reach them.

In the United States, the Seattle Central Library also surprises people. The building is made of glass and steel, and its unusual shape makes it look more like a sculpture than a library. But it works very well too. There are escalators that take visitors between floors, and all the books are arranged in one long spiral. The library also has lots of meeting rooms, so people from the area use it for community events, not just for borrowing books.

These three libraries show that a library doesn't have to be boring. With clever design, even a simple public building can become something truly special.

In the first paragraph, the writer says that most people think libraries _____.

  • are only for borrowing new books
  • are usually simple and quiet places
  • are often full of noisy visitors
  • are always designed by famous artists

What do many visitors say about the Stuttgart City Library?

  • It provides very little room for quiet study.
  • It holds the largest collection of European books.
  • It has straight shelves across every single floor.
  • It feels more like an artwork than a library.

Why did some people worry about the Tianjin Binhai Library at first?

  • They thought it would take many years to finish.
  • They felt the fake shelves were a bad idea.
  • They disliked the unusual wave shape of the design.
  • They believed the building seemed very hard to build.

In paragraph 4, the writer points out that the Seattle library _____.

  • is practical to use despite its strange appearance
  • is dangerous for visitors because of moving stairs
  • is too small for keeping all its books
  • is closed to the public during community events

What is the main idea of the passage?

  • Public libraries will soon replace other types of art museums.
  • Clever design can make modern libraries exciting and special places.
  • Modern architects should always copy the style of older buildings.
  • All cities should build unusual libraries to attract more tourists.
