Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the questions underneath.

In the deserts of the American southwest, something very strange happens. Heavy stones move across the dry ground all by themselves — sometimes for more than a hundred metres. Nobody pushes them. The wind doesn't seem strong enough to move them. Yet when people return to check, the stones have clearly travelled, leaving long trails in the dried mud behind them.

Scientists have been trying to explain this mystery for years. One of the earliest ideas was that wind simply pushed the stones along. But that theory didn't make much sense, because some of the stones weigh more than three hundred kilograms. When no logical explanation seemed possible, people started coming up with stranger ideas. Some believed that aliens were responsible, while others thought that someone was playing a clever joke.

Then, in 2013, a scientist who normally studies weather on other planets heard about the sailing stones and became curious. After looking into the problem carefully, he discovered something surprising. Ice forms on the bottom of the stones during cold desert nights. Once that happens, even a very gentle wind is enough to push the stones across the wet surface for long distances.

To prove he was right, the scientist carried out a simple experiment. He put a rock in his freezer and waited for ice to form on it. Then he placed some fine clay and a little water in a tray and set the frozen rock on top. When he blew on it gently, the rock moved without any difficulty at all. The mystery, it seemed, finally had an answer.

However, not everyone has been happy to hear this explanation. Every year, curious visitors travel to the desert hoping to see the sailing stones for themselves. Many of them actually prefer to believe that the stones are still a mystery. For these people, a simple scientific answer takes away the magic — and sometimes, people would rather keep the mystery than accept the truth.

According to the first paragraph, people know the stones have moved because they _____.

  • create loud sounds during the night
  • leave long marks across the ground
  • break into several pieces of rock
  • fall into deep holes in sand

Why did people think the first wind theory was wrong?

  • Some stones were far too heavy.
  • Desert winds were never strong enough.
  • Sand paths were completely dry throughout.
  • Stone trails were much too short.

The scientist discovered that stones can move when ice _____.

  • melts completely under the hot sun
  • covers the entire desert for weeks
  • creates deep holes under the sand
  • forms underneath them on cold nights

Why are some visitors unhappy with the scientific explanation?

  • It stops them from visiting the desert freely.
  • It removes the magical feeling of the event.
  • It costs too much money to test properly.
  • It fails to match earlier weather test results.

What is the writer's main purpose in this passage?

  • To describe how scientists study the daily weather
  • To compare the different kinds of heavy stones
  • To describe how a strange mystery was explained
  • To encourage more tourists to visit the desert
