Ships - faster and bigger

The first people to build ships were the Egyptians 5000 years ago. They used them to travel on the River Nile, the longest river in Africa. In the sixteenth century, people from Europe traveled thousands of kilometers in large ships. It was important that they found new ways around the world. Life was hard for these sailors, and the journey, many died because they often didn’t have food. In the nineteenth century, ships called “clippers” tea from China to Britain and wool from Australia to the USA. In very strong winds, clippers could sail 650 kilometers a day. The development of ships continued in the 20th century with the creation of steamships, which made travel faster and more efficient. In modern times, the largest ships are oil tankers. Some of these are 400 meters , so the sailors have to use bicycles to travel around the ship!

Read the article about a rescue center for dogs. Are the following sentences ‘Right’ or ‘Wrong’? If there is not enough information to answer ‘Right’ or ‘Wrong’, choose ‘Doesn’t say’.

DOGS ESCAPE FROM RESCUE CENTRE

The mystery of the unlocked cages at a rescue center for dogs had the staff scratching their heads as much as the dogs scratch themselves.

Just how were up to nine dogs at a time getting out of their locked cages at night and helping themselves to food and treats from the kitchen?

Some of the staff even wondered if they had a ghost living at the rescue centre who was letting the dogs out. To solve the mystery, they placed a camera in the building to see what went on at night. An hour after the staff had left, a friendly, wily dog of mainly greyhound descent named Red, was caught on camera opening his cage, then going to the other dogs’ cages and opening them.

Red was a very clever dog, after watching the staff unlock and open his cage each day to take him for walks and to feed him, he soon worked out how to open it himself. It wasn’t long before Red was able to open the cages of his ‘friends’ so that each night they could all feast and play together while the staff was at home asleep.

The staff suspected supernatural activity before discovering the truth.

Amelia and her cards

I recently met Amelia, from Brighton, England, and her father, David. Amelia is still only 13 but she's already got her own online business! It all started with a hobby that Amelia has had since she was very small - taking photographs. "l was three when my grandmother gave me my first toy camera," she says. "It was so easy to use and I loved going out into the garden and pushing my camera close to a beautiful flower. I wasn't interested in taking photos of the family!"

When Amelia was older, she won a digital camera in her first photography competition and she began to make birthday cards with her photos. David started a website for her so she could sell them online. She was so pleased!

Then she asked some school friends to help her make the cards in their spare time. "Of course I gave them part of what we got from selling the cards, so everyone was pleased!" she explains. I think a lot of people could learn from Amelia about how to have a successful business!

David says, "We couldn't believe it when people from Australia and Japan started sending in orders for Amelia's cards! It was amazing! But I'm also happy that Amelia's hobby doesn't stop her from getting good marks at school." Before we finished, Amelia told me that she hoped to become a teacher one day - so she's certainly got plans!
