Read the following passage and choose the best answer for each blank.

The weather

Rain, sun, wind, ice and snow are all different kinds of weather. On Earth, the weather is coldest if you live in the far north or the far south, and hottest in the middle of the .

Some of the countries in the north have long winters, with snow on the ground for most of the year. They also have nights, with only a few hours of light during the day. Ice on the roads makes driving difficult, and cars need to have special tyres.

Without wind, people in hot countries would find it difficult to stay cool. Countries have hot sunny summers are great for beach holidays, but if they are too hot, they often have deserts. In the desert, there is very little rain every year. Plants and animals find it difficult there in such weather because there is so little water.

Countries that have enough rain are usually very green because trees, grass and plants grow well there, but there are also lots of cloudy days in these countries.

Last week, Rob Stone, a famous British actor, and star of many Hollywood films had a party for his 53rd birthday. Rob invited a lot of other actors to his beautiful home for his party.

After dinner, he stood up and spoke to everyone there. He told them about something that happened when he was at school 40 years ago. As a schoolboy, Rob loved the theatre, and he was very happy when he had the first part in a play. It was a very sad play by Shakespeare, the sixteenth-century English writer. Rob played the part of an old man who had to die on stage. He practiced and practiced to become good at the part. He had to lie on a bed, say a few sad words of goodbye to his sons and then shout in pain and die.

Like all the other parents, Mr. and Mrs. Stone came to watch their son in the play. Rob told his guests, ‘I shall never forget that evening. It was terrible. As I died, I could hear my father laughing! I still remember now how bad I felt and I have not asked my father to one of my plays since.’

Rob celebrated his 53rd birthday with a warm party at a restaurant.

Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the questions.

My city
Pop singer Charlotte Bond talks about living in London.

I live in the center of London. I love it because there's always something happening and there are people around whatever time it is. Famous people like it too - they often come here for the restaurants and shops.

I've lived here all my life. When I was little, I had singing lessons at a place near where I live now. I was afraid of the teacher at first, and some of the songs we did together were quite hard to learn. But she was good at what she did and I learned a lot of things that have helped me in my career.

When friends visit me now, I enjoy taking them sightseeing. You can get a bus around the city, but we prefer to walk. I've got a little car and I love driving, but there's so much traffic here, and it's hard to find parking spaces.

One building I love is the Natural History Museum. They sometimes hold parties there, and last December my band and I played at one. I'll never forget it. When I go to exhibitions at the museum with my friends, I tell them all about that night and how amazing it was.

Soon I'll be leaving London to go on tour with my band. We're playing in lots of new cities and I can't wait to explore them. We've sold lots of tickets, which is great. I'll be away from my family for six months, but they're coming to see me sing, so it's fine.
