The Secret of the Self-Cleaning Lotus

The lotus is the national flower of Vietnam, and it often grows in dark, muddy water. However, its large leaves are always perfectly clean. How does this happen? Many people wonder about this beautiful and interesting plant.

Scientists call this special magic the "lotus effect." If you look closely at a lotus leaf under a microscope, you will see something amazing: millions of tiny bumps, each one thousands of times smaller than a grain of rice. These bumps push water away. When it rains, dirt simply washes away, so people do not need to clean the walls very often. Scientists have also created special fabric with the same tiny bumps as a lotus leaf. If you spill coffee or juice on a shirt made from this fabric, the liquid rolls right off instead of soaking in.

Nature is clearly full of great ideas. We just need to look closely at the world around us. The beautiful lotus teaches us a very useful lesson about science. Who knows what exciting things we will discover next?
