Read a story about Josh. Then answer the questions.

Josh loves to climb. Mostly he loves to climb trees. Yesterday, Josh climbed a big oak tree. As he climbed, the branches got smaller and smaller, but Josh kept climbing. Finally, Josh stood on the top branch. Just then, the branch broke! Down went Josh and he hit the ground hard. His leg hurt a lot and his mom was very angry with him.
"Josh, I told you not to climb trees!" she said at the hospital.
"Sorry, Mom. I will be more careful," Josh replied.
Josh's leg was broken and it took six weeks to heal, so he couldn't climb anything. Then, two months after the accident Josh started to think about climbing again. He told his friend Ross that he loved to climb.
"Why don't you join the climbing gym?" asked Ross.
"The what?" asked Josh.
"The climbing gym," Ross replied. "It is an indoor rock-climbing gym with instructors and ropes and everything. It's really fun."
"That sounds really cool, Ross" said Josh.
The next day, Josh followed Ross to the climbing gym. Of course, Josh loved it! That night he asked his mom if he could join the gym.
"Wow, Honey." "That sounds like a great idea," she said. "That way you can climb safety."
"Yes, no more broken legs!" Josh laughed.

Why did Josh fall out from the oak tree?

  • Because he slipped when climbing higher.
  • Because he lost balance while climbing to the top.
  • Because he was heavier than the branch.
  • Because he was too scared to stand on the branch.

How long did it take Josh to recover?

  • 6 days
  • 6 weeks
  • 6 months
  • 6 years

How did Josh's mom react to Josh's decision to join the climbing gym?

  • She didn't like it.

  • She disagreed with it.
  • She didn't support it.

Dear Parents,

It's that time of the year to start thinking about our annual spring festival. As you know, the school holds the festival for a couple of reasons. The first is to engender a sense of community between the school and the residents of the neighborhood. The second is to help raise money for the school to use in a variety of manners.

This spring, the festival will run from April 3 to 5 (Thursday to Saturday). All of the festival events are going to take place on the school campus. They will primarily be held in the school gym and auditorium as well as on the football field. This year, we have a large number of special activities planned. Please consult the attached sheet to see the events that have been scheduled.

Since we have so many activities planned, we are counting on you, our students' parents, to assist us. We need at least twenty-five volunteers to help out during the festival. If you can spare even one or two hours of your time, we would appreciate it. Please contact Mrs. Voss at 555-1212 if you can lend a helping hand at the festival.

Sincerely,

Jeanie Richards

Headmaster of Milton Academy

Read the following passage then choose the best answer to each question below.

Madagascar - When to go

Madagascar has two seasons, a warm, wet season from November to April, and a cooler dry season between May and October. However, different parts of the country have very different weather.

The east coast is hotter and wetter, with up to 4000mm of rainfall per year. In the rainy season, there are strong winds, and these can cause a lot of damage.  Avoid visiting eastern Madagascar between January and March because the weather can make road travel very difficult.  The dry season is cooler and more pleasant.

The high, central part of the country is much drier and cooler. About 1,400 mm of rain falls in the rainy season, with some thunderstorms. The summer is usually sunny and dry, but it can be cold, especially in the mornings, with freezing showers, and it may snow in mountain areas above 2,400m, and even stay there for several days.

The west coast is the driest part of the island. Here, the winter months are pleasant with little rain, cooler temperatures and blue skies.  The summers can be extremely hot, especially in the southwest.  This part of the country is semi-desert, and only gets around 300mm of rain per year.

What is the primary focus of the passage?

  • The best time to visit Madagascar for pleasant weather.
  • The different climates in various regions of Madagascar.
  • The impact of strong winds on Madagascar's east coast.
  • The semi-desert conditions in Madagascar's southwest.

What does the word "these" in paragraph 2 refer to?

  • areas
  • strong winds
  • different parts
  • seasons

Visitors should avoid going to eastern Madagascar between January and March because _____.

  • there are a lot of thunderstorms
  • this place is often overcrowded at that time
  • this part of the country is semi-desert
  • the weather can make it difficult to travel

According to the passage, there are _____ season(s) in Madagascar.

  • four
  • three
  • two
  • one

According to the passage, all of the following statements are true EXCEPT _____.

  • the wet season is cooler than the dry season
  • there is more rain in January than in June
  • the summers in the southwest can be extremely hot
  • snow sometimes falls in Madagascar
