The rain was pounding on the roof as I tried to sleep. It sounded like a downpour. We had just moved into our new house. It wasn’t really new, but it seemed new to us. Our old house was too small since Mom had the baby, so we bought a new house right up the street. Our address had changed from 123 Sycamore to 137 Sycamore.
The problem was that all the neighbors said the new house was haunted. All my friends teased me when they found out we were moving. I just let their words go in one ear and out the other.
Suddenly, I sat straight up in bed. Something was moving outside my window. Lying back down, my mind started to imagine things. Shadows moved across my wall, lightning flashed outside the window. Suddenly, a light shone on my window and my nightlight flickered and went out. Several minutes later, a moaning sound came from outside my door. I jumped out of bed, put my feet into my warm, fuzzy slippers, and grabbed my baseball bat. Whatever it was, it was not going to frighten me again.
I reached for the door handle and started to open it.
“Boo!” yelled my big brother Alfred. He was standing in the hall with a long stick with a lantern on the end. He was wearing dark glasses and a long, black rain jacket.
“Did I scare you?” he asked. I stood up to my full height. “No, of course not. I was just going to the kitchen to get a glass of water!”
We both burst into fits of laughter and rolled on the carpet in the hallway of our new house.
Why did the family decide to move?
What did the writer do when the kids made fun of his new house?

Read the announcement from a science teacher and answer the questions.
To all students enrolled in any science laboratory class:
There have been a couple of alterations in all of our science laboratory classes since the beginning of the semester.
To begin with, the laboratory fee for each class has changed. Students enrolled in biology classes must now pay $250 per semester, physiology students must pay $275, and chemistry students must pay $325. Physics students only need to pay $100 since they rarely use the lab. The reason for this is that there has been a general increase in the prices of the supplies needed for each class. The lab fees must be paid in full no later than Friday, September 29th.
In addition, all students must purchase the requisite safety gear for their classes. In the past two weeks, four pairs of safety glasses and two lab coats have gone missing. The school simply cannot afford to continue replacing this equipment, so now all students must have their own items, which they will be expected to hold on to. While it may not seem fair to punish everyone for the actions of a few, this is the only option we seem to have.
Doris Williamson
Head of the Science Department

Music is a huge part of a teenager's life, and most of us can't imagine life without it. Hip-hop, rock, rap, country, jazz, heavy metal, and others attract many young fans. But teens do more than listen. Some three million American teens study music in school, through private lessons, or simply on their own and thousand participate in "garbage bands", practicing and creating songs in the garages of their own or their friends' home.
High school can be a very stressful time. That's why music is so important to many teens. It helps us cope with the daily stresses of school and helps us to avoid pressure from our parents. It helps us to express our emotions and comforts us when we feel no one understands us.
The beauty of music is that there are so many kinds and so many ways to connect to it. A girl I know fell in love with music when she was twelve. She was going through a lot with her family, and her dad helped her through it by showing her the power of music before he died. She says music helps her get away from her problems and keeps her feeling okay when everything in her life is hard.
Everyone has his or her own personal connection to music. Personally speaking, I find that music fills me with something wonderful that I can't even begin to explain. What's your connection?
