I've just seen The Impossible, directed by J.A. Bayona. The film, which mixes elements of drama, thriller and disaster, is the incredible story of an ordinary family. The Bennetts travel to Thailand to Christmas. All too soon their idyllic holiday is brought to an abrupt end when a tsunami hits the resort where they .
The images of the giant wave washing over the resort are rather realistic and make you feel as if you were drowned, too. Stars Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor are fantastic as the brave parents, struggling to save their children. Tom Holland, plays the eldest boy, gives an extremely moving performance. What I like most about this film is its human quality. The Bennett family’s epic struggle for survival is a celebration of the power of love, sending a message of hope to other people caught in difficult situations. At the end of the film, I felt rather exhausted satisfied at the same time. Although some of the images of devastation and suffering are very hard to watch, I’d recommend everyone and see this film.

Many East Asian nations are about to have their Lunar New Year’s parties. In China, Japan, and others, they will welcome the Year of the Rabbit. But in Vietnam, it will be the Year of the Cat. There is no clear explanation for why the Vietnamese chose the cat instead of the rabbit, but there are some good ideas.
Ngo Huong Giang, an East Asian language expert, said one reason might be that the word in Mandarin for "Year of the Rabbit" sounds similar to the Vietnamese word for cat.
Nguyen Hieu Tin, who studies Vietnamese culture, said the answer may come from the rice fields. “Rice is a huge part of life in Vietnam. But there are many rats that will eat the rice. Luckily, we have cats which can hunt them,” he says.
Poet Le Thanh Hue provides a simpler reason, “To the Vietnamese, rabbits and rats look like each other. And we don’t want two similar animals in the zodiac.” He also notes that keeping rabbits is not common in Vietnam.
Hoang Thi Huong Giang, an office worker in Hanoi, said she had never paid attention to why Vietnam celebrates a different animal than the rest of the world. But she believes that life is a breeze for those who were born in the Year of the Cat, like her. They tend to enjoy smoother paths to success and generally live more comfortable lives compared to others. “It seems to be true that those who are born in the Year of the Cat are often more active, hard-working and friendlier.” Giang added proudly.

Claire: Tomorrow I’m going to the airport with my family to pick up the foreign exchange student we’re hosting.
Alan: I mean, you love meeting new people and doing things that are out of the ordinary. Having a student from Vietnam live with you for a semester will bring both.
Claire: Of course. Can you imagine how different her life must be from ours?
Alan: Personally, I’m a little let down that you’re not hosting a boy.
Claire: You’ll still have that chance. She looks very sporty.
Alan: That’s music to my ears. Perhaps I’ll enjoy hosting a foreign exchange student as much as you will.
