The family structure in Vietnam has changed a lot in recent years. In the past, many generations lived together in most Vietnamese families. They shared close relationships and divided household duties among themselves. However, this is changing. The number of nuclear families, which include only parents and children, has grown a lot in cities. By 2020, nearly 70% of families in big cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City were nuclear families.

In the past, marriage was very important, and most people married in their early twenties. Today, many people, especially in cities, choose to marry late in order to focus on education and work. The average age of marriage is now about 27 for women and 29 for men. Divorce rates were once very low because of cultural views, but they have also increased. By 2021, divorce rates in Vietnam were three times higher than in the 1990s, with more divorces in cities.

Also, there are more single-parent families because many people choose to raise children on their own. In the past, living together without marriage was considered a wrong thing. Now, it is more common among young people. While it is still less common than in Western countries, Vietnamese people have an opener view of it.
