Long time ago, around 1320 to 1350, the Maori people came to New Zealand. They lived in independent groups, called tribes, and took care of themselves. Each tribe had its own way of living, traditions, and customs.

In 2022, there are 875,300 Maori people in New Zealand, which is about 17% of the population. The Maori people have a strong sense of community and often interact in a warm and friendly manner. When greeting each other, they are in the habit of pressing their noses and foreheads together. This is called a "hongi" and it means they are sharing their breath and life force. The Maori people make crafts like woven flax baskets and carve wood to make a living from ancient time.

The world’s rapid development also makes some impacts on the Maori people’s lifestyle. In the past, the Maori people often cooked dishes in an earth oven, called a "hangi", but now they only use it when serving special guests on special occasions. However, the hangi earth oven is still considered a staple symbol of Maori culture. Maori people try to revive and maintain their cultural identity by passing it on to future generations. They share their experience and traditional customs with young people.
