Carnival

In late February or early March, countries celebrate a special festival called Carnival. Carnival is thought to have originated in Italy or Greece, and was just before Lent, the 40-day period before Easter. People dressed in costumes, wore colorful masks, ate, drank, and danced all night. This tradition spread to France, Spain, Portugal, and later to Brazil and the United States.  Now, two of the biggest Carnival celebrations take in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, and New Orleans in the United States. There are grand where people wear flashy costumes and dance and sing in the streets. In New Orleans, Carnival is known as Mardi Gras. Many roads and shops are shut down for the celebrations which can last for up to three weeks. Millions of visitors travel from around the world to join the party, and many more watch the event television.

Read the passage and answer the questions.

The idea of life in outer space has fascinated people for a long time. Some scientists argue that life developing on Earth was so unlikely that it probably didn’t happen anywhere else. The conditions here were perfect for life, and that might be rare. On the other hand, other scientists believe space is so vast, with countless stars and planets, that it’s almost impossible that we are alone in the universe.

For years, there have been numerous reports of alien visitors. People from different parts of the world have claimed to see UFOs or even aliens themselves. Some have even taken videos of strange objects flying in the sky. Some Americans even believe that the U.S. Army found an alien spaceship crashed in the desert but covered it up. While these stories may be true, scientists still haven’t discovered any significant traces of alien life.

When you look up at the night sky, you see only a small part of the universe. There are so many stars, planets, and galaxies that we can’t even count them. If Earth is the only livable planet, we are truly special in this amazing universe.

What do scientists disagree about life in outer space?

  • The conditions necessary for life to exist
  • The vastness of the universe
  • Whether life exists on other planets
  • Whether humans should colonize other planets.

What have some people claimed about aliens?

  • They usually dream about aliens.
  • Aliens are always kidnapping people.
  • Aliens are extremely dangerous.
  • They have met aliens unexpectedly.

What can be inferred about finding aliens according to the passage?

  • It is not possible to find aliens yet.
  • Finding aliens may cost a lot of money.
  • Aliens can be found in the USA.
  • Scientists have already known the truth.

The word "livable" in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to _____.

  • reachable
  • habitable
  • distant
  • familiar

What would be the best title for this passage?

  • The Possibility of Life on Other Worlds
  • Visitors from Faraway Planets
  • The Life and Times of an Alien Life
  • The Mysterious Crash Landing in America
