My husband, Marco, is a chef and has always been fascinated by the traditional flavors of the Italian countryside. Extreme Traditions
When we discuss dangerous activities, we usually think of modern extreme sports like base jumping. However, for centuries, certain communities have celebrated traditions that are just as risky. These events often involve hundreds of people risking their lives for the sake of history and honor.
The Running of the Bulls in Pamplona, Spain, is perhaps the most famous example. Every July, thousands of people gather in the narrow streets to run alongside six angry bulls. The animals are released from their pens and chase the crowd toward the city's bullring. Because the bulls can weigh over 600 kilograms and run much faster than humans, many participants are knocked over or injured every year. Despite the obvious danger, the event remains incredibly popular with tourists from all over the world.
This event happens only once every six years and involves moving giant tree trunks down steep mountains. These massive logs can weigh several tons, which requires incredible strength and teamwork from everyone involved to control them. Unfortunately, the logs are difficult to steer, and accidents occur frequently during the descent. Nevertheless, the local people consider it a great honor to take part.
These traditions may seem mad to outsiders, but they are a vital part of local culture. Whether it is dodging horns in Spain or riding logs in Japan, these risky events show that some people find fun in the face of danger.
