The Australian Outback Post Plane

Today I am accompanying Rowan Dougall, a postman in Queensland in the far north of Australia, on his daily delivery trip. Every day, Rowan Dougall sets off with his post bags in the tail of his little plane - not much bigger than a large family car - and flies across one of the wildest places on earth, Australia’s Cape North, to reach the very remote inland areas called The Outback.

We fly just three hundred meters above dangerous crocodiles and snakes. This is one of the longest and most expensive postman trips in the world. However, a 50-cent stamp not only gets a letter posted to a neighboring town, it will get it hand-delivered by flying postman to the furthest areas of the outback. To help with the cost, the plane takes three or four paying local people or tourists, and I am one of them.

In the back of the plane, there is a pile of post - envelopes of all sizes, newspapers, and a few parcels. Somehow I expected this post to look special, maybe to include some hats or cowboy boots, but this looks no more exciting than the post delivered to me in England. I look at some of the names and addresses, wondering about the people who are waiting for these letters and parcels.

Rowan’s route is 2,000 km long, with 15 stops, and I get a chance to meet Sandy, who has just received an order of clothes from a store. "I look forward to this weekly delivery ... there’s not much that you can’t get delivered out here," she says, "but I do miss actually going shopping." Rowan is checking the time. There are another ten stops to make before dusk. Time to leap back on the plane and up into the air.

What is the writer's main purpose in writing the text?
  • to get more support for postal services in the outback
  • to show the wild beauty of the Australian outback
  • to describe postal delivery services in the outback
  • to warn about the dangers to postmen in the outback
What does the writer say about the expense of delivering mail to Cape North?
  • Passenger fares help to cover some of the expense.
  • People in the outback pay 50 cents for a delivery.
  • it may be possible to find a less expensive system.
  • The sender pays more than the usual postage.
What surprises the writer about the items of post on the plane?
  • Some of the items are very unusual.
  • The items are similar to his own post.
  • He can see no clear names on the items.
  • The items seem to be disorganized.

When talking about the plane post service, Sandy says that _____.

  • there are many items that cannot be delivered to her
  • she would like the service to be more frequent
  • the mail plane does not stop long enough there
  • she would like to be able to do her own shopping
What might the writer say to a friend when he gets back?
  • The delivery service could be faster if the postman spent less time talking to the local people.
  • The postman has to fly the plane himself and deliver everything by hand.
  • The post plane is too small for the amount of post that has to be delivered.
  • Tourists are keener than local inhabitants to go as passengers on the post plane.

Technology in the movie

We go to the cinema for many reasons. Perhaps we want to be entertained, or perhaps we want a good laugh. Perhaps we want to see how other people live, or we want to see fantastic stories set in space. Whatever the reason and whatever the film you go to see, you can be sure these days that at least part of the film has been produced using modern technology.

Technology plays an enormous part in the film industry today. Film-makers rely on computers and technology to create amazing special effects and animation. Computer programs are so specialized nowadays that you can run a program to create just about any effect. Modern technology has unlocked the doors of our imagination. Because of computers, almost anything is possible in the world of film.

Films such as Toy Story show just how computers can be used in films successfully. There are no real actors (apart from the voices) and no real sets. The process begins with an idea. Someone thinks of a story or of a character. With a little imagination, the story unfolds. Other characters are created and given personalities and looks. From here the computers take over and bring the characters to life. Through the whole process, from the first thought to the end product, the characters only ever exist as numbers in the memory of a computer.

Technology in film is a very big business. There are many schools and universities that offer courses in computer animation and special effects. If you are interested in becoming a computer programmer for the movies, you could begin by taking a few courses. Provided that you complete your courses successfully, you can look for work in the film industry. Most people begin working on a team with other programmers. This is an excellent opportunity to learn the secrets of the business.

Of course, technology isn't everything. Computers can't generate their own ideas. People come up with the ideas, write the programs and build the computers in the first place! However, it is the powerful combination of man and computer that makes the film industry grow in new ways all the time.

Because of technology, the future of film is very exciting. Every day new discoveries are made about computers and how they can be used in the film industry and elsewhere. As long as people continue to use their imagination, the future will surely bring us new and exciting adventures in film!
