SUMMER JOBS FOR STUDENTS

Employers are more and more interested in taking on students during their holiday periods. Students can do easier tasks and free up time for their permanent employees to concentrate on the more demanding ones. Although there is little financial reward for students, it is a great chance to explore their interests and add to their CVs. However, few students know what jobs may be available.

Colleges sometimes advertise summer jobs on their notice-boards and in newspapers, and there are also well-known international organizations which can help. Students can also search the web, find an interesting company and email the manager to ask what temporary jobs exist. This may sound time-consuming, but students then get to work in the company of their choice, so it is what I recommend.

As a science student, two years ago I spent ten weeks in a laboratory in California, helping a group of researchers with their work. To begin with, the job seemed uninteresting because my responsibilities were not clear, but when I started working on a range of projects, such as writing research papers and creating web pages, my attitude changed.

I was paid enough to cover all my daily needs, so I had no financial worries. One of my jobs was to prepare educational material for schools. This was an entirely new challenge which I enjoyed so much that I decided to train as a teacher rather than a researcher when I got back. My only regret was that I'd been too busy to learn more about the USA, but then a good summer job seldom leaves you much free time and you should be prepared for that.

The Art of Architecture

People don't always think of architecture as art. If you look at the average block of flats in your neighbourhood, it's easy enough to understand why not all buildings can be considered 'art'. But if you look at some of the best-known buildings of the world - from ancient times to today - it's clear that a lot more goes into a building than concrete, metal and glass. In fact, architecture is art on a very grand scale and provides an excellent example of how people make art part of their everyday lives.  

Let's look at some examples of architecture as art. Think for a minute of the Acropolis in Athens. The Parthenon has long been considered a nearly perfect structure. The Sydney Opera House is another fine example of the art of architecture. It's graceful image in Sydney harbour is one that the entire world recognises. Finally, Chicago's Sears Tower, for a while the tallest building in the world, set a new standard for skyscrapers and modern architecture in general.

What exactly goes into creating a great building? In many ways, the process of building is very similar to the process that an artist goes through when creating a great painting or sculpture or other work of art. There are many steps from start to finish. The amount of creativity and imagination together with the skill and knowledge of the architect are the ingredients for truly great architecture.

The first step in designing a new building is understanding where the building will be constructed and what it will be used for. A wide, open one allows for different kinds of structures. The space for the new building has a lot to do with the design it will have. Of course, what the building will be used for also plays an important role. Will the new building be a library or a school? Or perhaps a tall office or apartment building? For every different kind of building, there are endless possibilities.

Next, the architect must come up with an idea in the same way that an artist must imagine what a new work of art will be. What will the building look like? Will it be modern in design, made of glass and steel? Usually, the architect has a concept of the building in mind. It includes all the elements the architect has chosen to express a particular idea or to serve a certain purpose.

After the design is established, the building process begins. This can take many months or even many years! In the beginning, the structure doesn't look much like a building at all. Gradually, each part of the new building is added and it begins to resemble the architect's idea. Sometimes, changes are made along the way, either inside the building or even on the outside. In that way, the final building may be different from the architect's first idea. This is often the case with works of art: we don't really know what they will look like until they are finished.

Finally, the building is finished and people move in to use it. Is it a pleasant and comfortable environment to live or work in? Was it designed well for its use? Is it interesting and beautiful to look at? Does it fit in well with its environment? The answers to these questions will determine whether or not it is a great work of architecture.

The Namibia Challenge in Africa

The Namibia Challenge is a seven-day race (0) organized by Raleigh International, a company established in 1985. It is a competition for people who want to learn teamwork and communication skills. It place in the Namib desert in Africa, where teams spend a week pushing themselves to their limit and useful skills. As a final challenge, participants have to climb Mount Brandberg, Namibia’s highest mountain.

Paul Webster, a university student, is willing to his experiences with other students. "The Namibia Challenge is especially useful if, me, you haven't had much experience of working in a team," he says. " the end of it, we were all trying to help each other in the team. It is also a great opportunity to meet people of many different nationalities in a very special environment. I am of going back to Namibia if I can."

Music from the Internet

These days, fans rather get their music online. On the morning of 10th October 2007, in Rainbows, the new album by the rock band Radiohead, was released. Radiohead fans had been looking to it for months. All they had to do to get it was turn on their PC, go to the Radiohead website and download it. Thousands did exactly that, and Radiohead didn't even insist on being paid! Instead, they said that people could pay as much or as little as they wanted. Some people downloaded it for free. Others preferred to pay, taking account the fact that if the album had come out on CD, it would have cost at least €15.

Some record companies accused Radiohead helping to destroy the music industry. However, many people blamed the record companies for charging so much for CDs, and were grateful to Radiohead for doing something different. One thing is certain: people want to on downloading music from the internet. The record companies better think about that carefully!
